Pros

VCA is very organized in regards to forms, systems, support staff at the corporate level, and reports. When the hospital I worked for was originally purchased by VCA, they provided us with educational tools, allowed us to go to conferences and leadership programs, and left us to maintain our "personality" within our hospital.

Cons

In the past couple of years, VCA has been more focused on profit rather than medicine. I know that a business must be profitable to stay open, and our particular hospital was profitable, but it was never enough. They began trimming services, charging more (automatic 6-7%) regardless of staff changes and doctor capability. They preach service, but continually cut staff, cut programs, and expect the staff to remain dedicated and professional. Mid-level management (regional level) show very little support or appreciation for a job done well.

Pros

Decent benefits and compensation are probably the only reasons to consider VCA as a potential employer. If current trends continue, then VCA will own so many veterinary hospitals that their prevalence alone will force many to consider employment there.

Cons

They are focused so much on instituting "proven" VCA management methods (directives on purchasing, staffing, promotions, unified software system, etc.) that the psychological and financial health of new aquisitions plummets.

Pros

VCA does offer health insurance benefits, though a bit on the expensive side. There is quality veterinary care, atleast at my location, because I would never stay at an animal hospital that didn't show compassion for animals. Another perk is the employee discounts.

Cons

Let's see...where do I start? Working for incompetent management who never has the employees' best interest as priority, constantly having to explain why you get stuck there late because management is never there but they don't want payroll to run overboard and even though hospital hours end at a certain time people show up late for their appointments and we're not allowed to turn away walk-ins or emergencies even though its not a 24hr. facility so therefore have no choice but to be stuck in overtime even though you're exhausted from a long shift but have no relief staff.
