As the company has grown, much of that culture has shifted. Several employee-friendly benefits were reduced or eliminated (for example, unlimited PTO was replaced with three weeks, education benefits were removed, and MLK Day is no longer observed, 401k matching doesn't come close to what most other companies do).
The company frequently promotes the concept of “lean teams,” which in practice often means fewer people doing more work while compensation hasn’t kept pace with expectations. This can create a culture where employees feel undervalued and overextended; it's become toxic.
Leadership development is another challenge. Managers are often promoted without prior management experience or training, which leads to inconsistent leadership and communication styles across teams. In many cases, the employees who advance are those who align closely with leadership rather than those who foster healthy, collaborative teams, which causes more toxicity.
Overall, the environment feels very different from the supportive culture that existed earlier in the company’s history.
