Pros

Smart engineers, good people. Decent benefits. Carlsbad, CA is a nice place. Opportunity to work on a variety of areas. Decent work/life balance.

Cons

People get randomly fired all the time. Horrible business model where we provide contract based design services to other customers. Too much dependence on government contracts. Not very innovative and cutting edge. Low risk, low growth company. Benefits are reducing every year. Employees are not kept well informed. Fragmented company with no clear vision.

Pros

Very smart and talented co-workers. Flexible work hours, essentially come in when you want, go home when you want. On site (Starbuck style) coffee house, free coffee and snacks. On site cafeteria that has GREAT food at a reasonable price. Most middle management is very talented and really listens to you and your ideas. Lots of room to advance your career. Many in-house seminars on a variety of topics. Free membership to one of the best health club facilities in Carlsbad, and it's with-in walking distance. I love it there.

Cons

Upper and middle management is ok, but over the past several years managers have been brought in from the outside rather than promoted from with-in. This has eroded the "ViaSat" culture, something that was a key reason I joined ViaSat.

Pros

If you are a hardware engineer, ViaSat is the company for you. Most of the programs are fighting over getting engineers on their project. The management, being hardware engineers, are supportive of a creative atmosphere and doing anything they can to keeping engineers motivated and happy. Pay and benefits are awesome.

Cons

All other functional positions are seen as necessary evil, making for two big issues: 1. Non-engineers could really use an org-chart and escalation path to get work done. 2. Re-orgs usually mean non-engineers (seen as commodities) are replaced instead of reassigned.
