Pros

It's a job. The training was pretty good. Most of the regular employees (non-managers) are good to work with. Job security is very good. It's very hard to get fired, engineers get moved to sales in lean times, and management will put the whole plant on a week-long furlough when it's really bad (it's a pay cut, but can be better than a random layoff).

Cons

Check out the reviews. From 2010 to August, 2012, there were only 6 reviews, all negative to mediocre . As one would expect for a medium-size company, there was one every few months.. Fast-forward to the week of August 15-19, 2012: 8 *glowing* reviews. I think Virginia Transformer management discovered glassdoor, and are trying to game the system. Micromanagement, lack of trust, collaboration actively discouraged, pay and benefits are not very good, no concept of flexible time for salaried employees. No work/life balance (must use vacation time for annual plant shutdowns. Once vacation was gone, plant-wide furloughs cut at my pay.

Pros

Upward mobility does not depend only on education. Demonstrated skills are given due consideration for promotions. The important contribution of production employees is acknowledged and rewarded. This business does not depend on consumer sentiment. The need for utilities continues in all economic conditions. Continuing education is supported and encouraged.

Cons

Many younger employees with lesser experience are present. The facility shoudl be expanded. We don't have enough room.
