Pros

The student (and I presume full time employee) health and dental insurance are really good here, and the Blacksburg area is very safe. Insurance is 90% covered if you are on a GRA or GTA. Depending on your advisor, you may have a very flexible work schedule so you only have to come in for occasional meetings and are free to work when you want. This is especially nice if you are a night owl, like some of the students I know.

Cons

If you are a grad student, your experience will vary greatly depending on your graduate advisor. The professor I worked for was more concerned with output than with your presence in the lab, so it was a nice environment since my schedule is usually a bit unpredictable.
