Pros

Helping with type 2 diabetes is a lovely ambition

Cons

Virta has a serious leadership crisis that erodes trust, morale, and psychological safety across the company. The People Team in particular is a revolving door, and for good reason. There is a pattern of promoting and protecting toxic leaders—especially one in particular—despite overwhelming data from engagement surveys, turnover reports, and firsthand feedback. This leader creates an environment of fear, isolation, and anxiety. He speaks poorly of his own employees behind their backs, including to their peers, yet gives no direct feedback or support. His priority is power and recognition—not results, not people, and certainly not the company mission. Multiple team members have left after short, painful stints under him, yet executive leadership continues to protect him while dismissing concerns. If you’re thinking of joining the People Team, know this: you will not be set up for success. You will not be empowered. And you will likely leave disillusioned, sidelined, or worse. The mission is inspiring, but the internal culture—especially among the “old guard”—is toxic, defensive, and resistant to change. They protect each other at all costs, regardless of impact or ethics.

Pros

Overall easy interview process, given its all remote. There are definitely some good folks working here. The mission and the product are great and this is what we all sign up for.

Cons

After spending a few years working at Virta, I've come to realize a lot of executives and senior managers are willing and ready to throw others under the bus to protect themselves quite often. Attrition of tenured staff seems to be a growing problem that HR can't wrap their hands around. They've also been actively asking new hires to put up reviews to help pad their glassdoor numbers. It seems pretty common for folks to come in being very excited about the mission/product and grind away for years and then end up, leaving very unsatisfied, realizing it was a lot of smoke and mirrors. I do think the CEO has good intentions but I believe the other C level executives are working hard to protect themselves and they're close knit circles, even if that means hurting others and the business in the long run. There's also a lot of silos surprisingly for such a young (startup) company where the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing, and then the finger pointing starts. Usually the loudest executive gets their way and shifts the blame to some other team, who has little to no control with what they're actually having problems with in the first place. In the past, I would have recommended Virta as a great place to work, nowadays not so much.

Pros

Good coworkers, excellent mission. It was a place I thought I could put down roots.

Cons

Technology leadership pushing for technology they don’t understand for reasons they can’t articulate. CTO periodically does AMA and it’s clear he doesn’t understand the very expensive technology strategy he is pushing, in a company that isn’t meeting its financial goals and isn’t growing fast enough to survive.
