Pros

Great salary and benefits. Beautiful office space. Nice location for mass transit. Given the right project and blessing from management it can be wonderful environment to work on very interesting projects.

Cons

Because the real function of the place to satisfy the whims of the owners (often without any other clear criteria), it can become very strange and somewhat irrational work environment. The owners are spoiled children who are surrounded by senior managers who do and say anything to please the boss and keep their own jobs. This creates an incredible bubble around the owners that prevents them from seeing the reality they have created.

Don't be tempted by the pay, it's not worth it.

Pros

Vulcan is a place to work for two years and the leave when you have it on your resume. They offer great pay/benefits-but that's because no one would work for the Allens if they didn't.

Cons

Zero work/like balance. Not family friendly at all. Asked for time off 8 weeks in advance of trip, got the ok two week before I left, you will constantly be made to feel bad if you take time off. Terrible upper management, people make it to management positions by not making waves-the ones who do are usually fired or find better jobs elsewhere. HR must be getting paid a ton of money because upper mngt gives them a workplace violation story, HR "investigates" and finds out the story is untrue, HR is then afraid to report back to upper mngt and has the investigated employee give a "report". Backstabbing, incredible c.y.a, monitored emails/phone calls/texts, you're being watched at all times.

Pros

Good pay.Interesting projects.High-powered people around me. To the outside world this looks like a really cool place to work. Who wouldn't want to work on visionary projects for one of the world's richest people?

Cons

But consider this: the top managers are extremely high control. They don't delegate decision making, and as a result a lot of the smart people who go there ending up spinning their wheels in frustration. People hang on because of the top pay, but there's an implicit muzzling that goes on.
