Pros

- A company shows its mettle during a crisis. I've seen people (top down) show some of the strongest ethics, maturity, and courage imaginable in the last 6 months. - Heather is a gifted and serious leader. I genuinely believe that most of the good things about WPE cascade from her leadership and high quality hiring. - Some of the smartest and most genuinely talented folks I've worked with. - Remote-first culture, with no indication that an RTO mandate is around the corner. - People celebrate accomplishments ALL THE TIME at WPE. - While nowhere near top-of-market, the compensation and benefits are fair. With tech companies doing hard cultural pivots, WPE has such a distinct quality of life advantage right now that makes up for leaving a little money on the table.

Cons

- Big one: the uncertainty that we live with in the wake of Matt Mullenweg's unhinged behavior, both toward WPE and toward the WordPress ecosystem in general. Causes a lot of unnecessary anxiety. - For teams that aren't near an office hub, it's been hard to get budget approval to travel for IRL meetups. - Restructuring that has resulted in layoffs last year also caused a fair amount of anxiety for employees. - Career growth opportunities are limited lately. Probably true everywhere, but when you're not in hyper-growth mode, there just aren't many spots available to grow into. - Leadership in WordPress seems dedicated to making all the wrong decisions. At best, they're committed to throwing good money after bad on a visual/block editor (Gutenberg) while mostly ignoring improvements to the CMS, and at worst they are intentionally antagonizing their engaged user and developer community. WPE should probably figure out a way to diversify our product lines.

We're so glad to hear you've had such a positive experience with things like our response to recent events, our CEO Heather (we agree, she rocks), our virtual-first work model and benefits we provide, and of course the people we have the privilege of working alongside every day. Our virtual-first hybrid model create some challenges in regards to bringing people together, but we're actively exploring opportunities for teams to connect and hope to provide more chances for them to come together in person. We kicked off 2025 with an initiative called "Vision, Values, Victory" which aims to ensure all employees at WP Engine understand our business goals and how we plan to get to there. It's our hope that this new framing will allow everyone to see how their work fits into the bigger picture. This year we're providing a number of workshops for both managers and individual contributors with the goal of ensuring everyone at WP Engine can grow their career, if you haven't done so we'd encourage you to take a look at these offerings and sign up for any workshops that might be applicable to your own career aspirations. Pros

This company and leadership mean well, they have all the right intentions, right fully focussed on revenue, profitability, people, DEI.

Cons

Many instances of simply wrong leaders in wrong spots. These are great humans but are simply not equipped to do their jobs. Completely lack experience or lack foresight. Execution and delivery on commitments and decision making is slow. Company remains an aging startup, entirely sales driven. Product led growth is the latest buzz word- so many such buzz words in the last 2 years, optimistic that atleast this will stick.

WP Engine looks good from the outside, horrible from the inside

Pros

The lunches are free The office is downtown There is free parking The hours are flexible Good lunch options downtown Decent quarterly parties Several very smart engineers

Cons

NOT A TECH COMPANY. WP Engine is really a support company. Supporting individual customers and all their crazy decisions until everything falls apart. What a customer wants is always trumps technical decisions. A lot of the technology is dated and new ideas and technologies are impossible to implement. Good managers are far and few between. There are a lot of politics and favorites. There is a lot of kool-aid drinking. The core values they preach are only followed if it matches the company's needs. Very little planning. Work is only done on things that are broken that very minute. Plan on working a lot. It is not uncommon to work 80 hour weeks because some customer broke their wordpress site. They will "ask you to leave" if they do not like your ideas. I saw this happen to people. You have to make the right people happy or you are gone. Not a happy place to work.
