Too much Red Tape

Pros

Great PM's and general leadership

Cons

WSP makes promises to be a company that develops business and invests in it's employees but all they really do is gobble up competition and wonder why mid-level staff can't be retained. During the slow winter months where the geologists and field staff have little field work, WSP was quick to fire and layoff several staff before February only to realize they needed them again 2nd and 3rd quarters when staff usually work 50+ hour weeks all because of billable goals. The focus of WSP seems to be having lavish downtown offices in major cities for their engineers and business development and neglecting all things needed by the water and environment field staff. The red tape of things like trying to acquire new office field equipment is painfully ineffective and inconvenient for when needed. Empty promises of more diverse work and projects with other offices and regions is discussed every year but never actually comes to fruition as no one wants to share resources or collaborate.

Pros

Great talented group and good work atmosphere. The opportunity to work on different projects makes bridge inspection more enjoyable. Good for an entry-level job with a lot of room for learning and growth at first.

Cons

Too much corporate bs. The company is publicly traded so nothing trickles down to the people actually sweating in the field. Unnecessary pressure to get work done fast and on time with no added incentive. Hard to progress when you get to an intermediate level as seniors are nowhere to go to give you space. Bonuses are nowhere to be seen. You have to beg for a proper yearly raise. Healthcare benefits are subpar.
