Open door policy provides students who are there for reasons other than wanting to do the work and then they wonder why they aren't doing well. Yet, pressure is put on retention, so when they don't pass it's somehow the instructor's fault. Management is so busy trying to push paperwork to please the accreditation entities that it cuts into the time to actually spend working with the students, grading or preparing for class material. Didn't even get an orientation on school policies (of which there are a lot) when I started--I have had to learn by accidentally violating some of them. It would have been helpful to know ahead of time. Also had only two days on the payroll (which they fill with mandatory meetings that in no way help a beginner) to prepare to teach 4 classes full time. Evidently, they expect you to do all the prep work on your own time. Over two years later, nothing has changed.
