A frustrating work environment

Pros

Wayfair is all about hiring from within and making sure employees are happy during the day, mainly because the work they do is tedious and boring. Steve and Niraj are nice and personable and the relaxed work environment is nice.

Cons

Wayfair is very hypocritical. They say they want employees to have good work life balance but in a way, the open floor plan makes for a more competitive environment. Everyone can see what everyone is doing. So, if you need a 5 minute break to recharge, everyone can see that you aren't working. Most eat at their desks and work through lunch. There is pressure/competition to stay far later than 5 pm each night.

Pros

Wayfair offers decent health insurance, though the premiums could be lower. There's a ping pong table and equipment available for use to unwind during a hectic day. Some email agents manage to work here for over a year without ever being forced to handle additional projects and queues. Most do not.

Cons

Free snacks are nice but all are empty carbs and junkfood. 'Subsidized' drinks in the break room cost more than buying the same drinks elsewhere. We have random employee appreciation days that are poorly planned and poorly executed. The break room is always a mess and people rarely clean up after themselves here.

No loyalty

Pros

Working here was a great introduction into the start-up world. It was fun, lots of younger people around my age and we were able to really contribute to the growth.

Cons

They have no loyalty to their employees. Having worked there for several years, they promoted people based on tenure and politics rather than experience. They also lay-off and fire people who have worked for them for years, without a care in the world. They hire kids right out of school for customer service and pay them pennies.
