Disorganized leadership

Pros

Opportunities to drive initiatives, hard working co-workers, decent office space, free snacks and coffee

Cons

Senior management has zero vision. I get no sense that they have any department identity or action plans to improve the vast opportunities. There are obvious issues caused by management decision that were not well thought out, not communication or solicited. Those issues are never talked about or addressed. Everyone is expected to work at RAPID speed despite your tenure. This can be a great opportunity or suffocating. You will be given ZERO guidelines or expectations. You will be thrown into a project that is already in flight and given feedback that you are not driving the project enough after a couple of weeks (even though you do not own the project nor were you a part of the project scoping). Speaking of project scoping, there is none. Start a project and never expectations.

Thank you for sharing your feedback and I’m sorry you feel this way about your experience at Wayfair. I know it can sometimes be difficult to provide advice to management, but we rely on employee feedback to improve our processes. As you noted, the company is growing very quickly and as we scale to support this growth, we want to ensure every voice is heard so we can best refine the employee experience.

Exploitative Company

Pros

Not your typical "office" environment. They try to promote a friendly, positive culture

Cons

The promotion of this culture is to cover the real essence of this company. Most people leave within 8-10 months and for good reason. Performance expectations rise with each month and failure to meet your metrics will result in negative attention from your team leader, who themselves are under pressure to meet targets. This is pretty normal for this type of industry except Wayfair lead you to believe they are fundamentally good people who value transparency in business management. From my experience and what I have seen from working here they are anything but. These 5 star "reviews" attest to this behaviour: fake and manipulative.

Pros

Wayfair is one of the few companies in the world at a significant scale (~$6.5B market cap) experiencing tremendous growth (~40% in Q3 2017). This creates a ton of opportunity for people who are smart and eager to grow. We also have teams working on interesting and difficult problems across the business, including a large team that is focused on reimagining large parcel delivery. Wayfair has the chance to become the best in the world at shipping big, heavy, fragile products, and will completely change how people shop for furniture in the process. It still feels like Wayfair is in the early stages of capturing the market opportunity in front of it, and it is extremely exciting to be a part of that. The senior leadership at the company is very strong overall, and I have a high degree of confidence in the direction of all of our teams.

Cons

Base compensation is lower than some key competitors for talent, but all-in comp with bonus + equity is strong. We don't always communicate this very well, which hurts the business. The rapid growth creates some painful situations. People changing managers 3+ times in 6 months, many folks reporting to first time managers, frequent re-orgs, etc. I don't mind this, and I've learned to roll with the punches, but if you are someone who hates change you will not be happy at Wayfair. Broadly speaking, benefits are worse than places like Facebook/Google/HubSpot/etc. Wayfair is a frugal company, and you won't find free lunch or massages or daycare here. That said, this enables us to reinvest in the business and continue to grow, which over time will make your equity valuable enough to more than make up for the inferior benefits.
