Pros

The work itself is great. I am able to move fast and build a powerful set of skills that will help me down the road. The overall compensation is actually pretty strong when you consider the equity packages given out, unless the stock price dives. I am surrounded by smart people. And finally, having worked at Wayfair for a few years definitely opens doors because recruiters know that Wayfair is a bootcamp where many don’t last and having stayed there long enough is a sure sign that you are really strong.

Cons

Career development is limited and on the principle “the loudest person in the room gets the promotion”. Results really don’t matter as much, which is astonishing. I also see a frat house mentality in Product Management, where senior leaders pick favorites and there is also a lot of jockeying for power. That isn’t shocking when you note that Wayfair has started to bring in almost exclusively former consultants who are the epitome of a frat house and loud. I am aware of multiple all-star talent colleagues who have seen the writing on the wall (that career development just hits a wall when you are not the super aggressive frat boy) and are just waiting for the right opportunity to jump ship. At least we can all be picky about that next gig.

Thank you for your feedback. Wayfair values diversity of thought and background. Common threads across our hires are an intellectual curiosity and analytical rigor, a comfort with ambiguity, an ownership mentality and a willingness to perform as a player-coach with our teams. It is true that, among other profiles, we’ve found Wayfair’s dynamic, entrepreneurial environment to be a fertile ground for former strategy consultants looking to take on more immediate and results oriented leadership responsibilities. As Wayfair continues to grow, we endeavor to hire the best talent we can find across a range of backgrounds and profiles as we focus on building a company and a culture that is impactful, inclusive and innovative.

Pros

Good pay. I loved working with the customers and miss that part.

Cons

Stressful, they work you like dogs. It has grown so fast, and not enough help. Then they expect 85% availability but also force you to call customers when someone from another department calls and asks you to help a customer that isn't on the phone. This means going not ready to call and there goes your 85% availability as they use it against you. I worked there 2 years and got let go 1/2018for a documented IT issue affecting hundreds of employees. There is no director in the office I worked out of and just managers gone rogue. Used to be a fun, relaxed place to work but the last year you are always on edge. We were treated less like adults and constantly threatened. Quite a few in the same situation I was in, let go the last few months. It's suspicious at best. Everyone i worked with is always on edge thinking they are next. My manager was hardly ever available and she never answered my emails or messages. I told her once I was struggling with a new process and needed help but never got any from her. It is now just another call center.

Pros

Opportunities to drive initiatives, hard working co-workers, decent office space, free snacks and coffee

Cons

Senior management has zero vision. I get no sense that they have any department identity or action plans to improve the vast opportunities. There are obvious issues caused by management decision that were not well thought out, not communication or solicited. Those issues are never talked about or addressed. Everyone is expected to work at RAPID speed despite your tenure. This can be a great opportunity or suffocating. You will be given ZERO guidelines or expectations. You will be thrown into a project that is already in flight and given feedback that you are not driving the project enough after a couple of weeks (even though you do not own the project nor were you a part of the project scoping). Speaking of project scoping, there is none. Start a project and never expectations.

I know it can sometimes be difficult to provide advice to management, but we rely on employee feedback to improve our processes.
