      OK if you WANT temporary employment

      Pros

      If you need a temporary job and a steady income is not a concern, or you want the flexibility to not have a a regular 9-5 job, phone or field data collection can be a good way to earn an income.

      Cons

      Working on projects doing data collection over the phone or in the field is temporary, so there is not much stability in this kind of job. Periods of unemployment between projects is likely.

      Offsite workers are treated with indifference

      Pros

      Westat has good benefits and I believe that it is a good company to work for overall.

      Cons

      However, if you work offsite, be prepared to kick and scream to get anything. This includes respect. I actually had someone from the home office ask if I knew what a phillips head screwdriver was, or if we had stoplights in our town.

      Pros

      They offer an excellent benefits package, including medical insurance, 401K contributions, flexible spending accounts, professional development, employee stock ownership options and plenty of vacation and sick leave. There is an intensive employee review each year that ensures that managers are aware of your accomplishments and goals. They offer plenty of feedback on your performance and seem to be interested in facilitating your professional development.

      Cons

      Westat is a company that is slow to change and adopt new technologies/philosophies. If you are interested in being on the cutting edge, you may find that this company is not right for you.
