Pros

The company allows you to work from home for several positions. You can start from home, including training. Many management positions are also from home. Pay is good for a work at home job. Thorough training is provided before you start. Someone is always there if you have questions you need answered. You got to speak with people of different backrounds and across the country.

Cons

Many times the system was down, so you could not work, which means you did not get paid. Communication was not always the best. I did the California Health Survey and you had to deal with rude people. They changed my schedule on me a couple times at the last minute.

Pros

Very little pressure, relaxed environment, no hard deadlines. Work place is friendly and mor like a university atmosphere then the typical pressure cooker atmosphere.

Cons

Newly promoted management are not provided tools or training to make them effective. Management is promoted from within and seems to be based on length of sevice only and not capability. Overall, management could be much better. Currently, management skills most be learned on the job. Company assumes that the longer a manager or director is in a position the more quailified they are. This of course is not true.

Pros

Climate: I've been at Westat for a number of years because of the organizational climate and the people I work with. I also like the opportunities to learn; support to attend professional meetings and short courses, etc. Different projects mean a variety of things to get involved in.

Cons

We work on what clients are seeking support for, which might not always be what we would prefer to do. Work can become extremely heavy at times. For the person who commented on low morale: I haven't seen this in my department and I've been here many years. But then, there are many departments and more than 1800 employees.
