Pros

The work itself can be extremely engaging. Westat studies contribute to the greater good, which is an important factor to many. I would recommend but with awareness of the caveats below.

Cons

Work/life balance is an in-house joke: salaried employees are expected to routinely work long hours to complete unrealistic workloads without compensation. Balance only applies to top-tier "showcase" staff. Management changes and restructuring are primarily at the expense of support staff. In fairness, the financial pressure of the last six years has been affecting the company culture, as well.

Pros

- Great Benefits (401k, paid vacation, personal time off (fringe hours), medical, dental and vision and other benefits) - Great company vibe, to an extent - Wonderful opportunity to develop skills, if any, and master straight out of college or coming in with knowledge from prior experiences

Cons

- Company, overall, does not have much diversity as it may describe - Hard to move up in Grade, position or other means, due to the collective amounts of people who STAY in their position for decades - Managers may need biannual training sessions to learn how to operate different styles of people or learn how to manage groups, in general - If you lose one project due to a manager not liking you, you will lose your job indefinitely

Pros

I’ve been at Westat for close to ten years and it’s been a great experience so far. Westat is one of the leading companies in its field and it’s exciting to be at the hub of social sciences research. The company has very collegial culture, probably driven out of the fact that it’s owned by the employees and everyone benefits from each other’s success. This company also has the most diversity of any place I’ve worked. I regularly find myself in meetings where I am the only male in a room of 10 or more women. We have multiple ethnicities, ages, and backgrounds, and it’s a big plus to have the benefit of all those different experiences in our work.

Cons

Westat is in a period of transition right now with a new President (now President and CEO) at the helm, and a fair amount of retirements and new hires at the Practice Director level. Transition naturally brings a lot of changes, and that can be difficult for people to deal with. However, I think most of the changes taking place are for the better, and will make Westat a more competitive and successful company in the future.
