Pros

If you are going to work in the appliance industry, you should work for the leader. Great work experience and resume builder. You get excellent opportunities to work on important projects very early in your career. For the right person, you can get exposure to senior leaders very early. You learn a lot about a very complex business and get exposure to a wide variety of functional areas. You work with some very smart people.

Cons

Tough industry that is an experiencing a multi-year decline. Old boy culture. Extremely matrixed culture makes decision making very complex and difficult to hold to a strategy/decision. Although people a very smart and driven, they often use these talents to get ahead in a very political environment. The HR strategy is very divisive and does not help focus people on the common good.

Pros

Lots of room to grow both upwardly and/or into different areas. In one town we have different product groups, functions(procurement, lab engineering, new platform development, existing platform improvement, finance, marketing, etc).

Cons

A lot of hard work is expected. And Whirlpool seems committed to doing what it takes to survive. I am convinced they will let more people go if the economic times get tougher.

Pros

Whirlpool tries to fo the right things for thier employees. There is not a lot of pressure to work past 5PM and its pretty easy to balance life and work. The people who work for Whirlpool are for the most part nice. There is opportunity to move between jobs and do things that are outside of your normal area of expertise and comfort zone. Whirlpool is committed to the communities where they employ people as well as Habitat for Humanity. They take Corporate Social Responsibility quite seriously and are committed to their customers. HQ is in a very pleasant community.

Cons

There is so much red tape and getting things done is very difficult. There are virtually no processes for anything and some employees lack a true sense of urgency. Because it can be so hard to get things done, people tend to check out and only do the minimum. There is too much emphasis on cost reduction and not enough on true innovation and design. It is almost like Whirlpool doesn't really know what it wants to be, so it tries to be everything. There is a TON of duplication of effort and therefore wasted effort and there is an excellent opportunity for the company to instill some discipline and structure in order to make it easier for the company to out maneuver the competition.
