Stay for the art but exit through the gift shop

Pros

Summer and Holiday parties, being able to work in a great area and having people from all over the world come to experience the art and the location. Friendly director. The store is amazing and has great products. Very experienced docents and the terraces on all the floors offer a stunning view of the city.

Cons

Management is very unprofessional in terms of coming to their staff's aide whenever a visitor gets mad at something that is completely out of our control: they yell in public, are demeaning and condescending, and easily get stressed out about the littlest things. They overlook the amount of hours and hard work you put in only to be passed over for a promotion that you're very much qualified for. Also, being yelled at on a constant basis at the morning meetings is never a great way to start the day. Also, the uniforms are not attractive and are invitations for harassment from passersby.

Good Job

Pros

A pretty relaxed environment with very reasonable managers, not at all corporate feeling and it is very conscious of the fact that it is an arts organization. I have been very happy to work there. Pay is very good compared with other NY museums.

Cons

Outside of long hours standing and coat check as part of the rotation of duties, the biggest con is that part-time staff are temporary with no benefits and full time staff are permanent with full benefits. Super unfair, especially for part-timers employed for over a year.

Decent in some respects

Pros

The team of people is amazing, hard-working, and good-natured. There are some good perks once in a while, gifts, small bonuses, free food, and of course free access to all the artwork you could want to see. Celebrity guests often add minor excitement to the day.

Cons

Management is erratic, not infrequently incompetent, and occasionally downright rude and/or dismissive. Other departments can barely contain their condescension for the people on the floor doing the real work. That work is mostly thankless and mundane. High volume of guests means higher chances for daily doses of douchebaggery. Pay is above minimum wage, but not much better. Absolutely NO opportunities for career growth in the creative side of the museum industry.
