The wonderful world of Wiley

Pros

Working at Wiley as a Sales Director has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The company fosters a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement, making it an ideal place for professional growth. The collaborative spirit at Wiley is one of my favorite things. I have had the pleasure of working closely with talented colleagues across Sales, Product, Marketing, and Engineering. Their expertise and dedication have been instrumental in achieving our sales targets and driving the company's and my own success.

Cons

The publishing industry is facing significant economic pressures felt across all teams at Wiley. For example, the shift towards open access and the rise of digital platforms has disrupted traditional publishing methods and created some uncertainty in the industry. Problems like these have led to tighter budgets and a need for increased focus on our organizational strategy and spending, which can sometimes limit resources for innovative projects.

Good Company Culture

Pros

I enjoyed my time working at Wiley. Company culture was good, esp for a large company. Upper management encouraged maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and that was reflected in a generous PTO policy. I believe the base # of PTO days was 18 when I started, plus 2 floating holidays, and the # of PTO days would increase depending on your # of years employed there. 100% remote work was also a huge plus.

Cons

As with most companies, salary increases were not stellar unless you were getting an actual promotion. Promotion cycles were only offered once per year, and in my experience, you had to apply for a position opening to secure a promotion - they weren't offered based on performance. They did have a merit-based bonus system, but the % you're eligible more is dictated not just by your own performance, but also by the company's overall performance for that year, so...if it wasn't a great year for the business, it wasn't a great year for bonuses.

Not the most efficient processes and structures, which can be barriers to excellence.
