Anxious atmosphere of a sinking ship

Pros

There are some brilliant, talented and loyal people in this company. They do create some good products, and being a company of 200+ years, have a great reputation. Good life/work balance.

Cons

Wiley is a company trying to stay afloat in a dying industry. Constant emails fly around about redundancies which creates an atmosphere of panic. Those in sales and strategy parade their importance while the overworked "grunts" are essentially ignored. Those in sales and upper positions are rarely in the office, which leaves disenfranchised employees sitting in isolated cubicles with their headphones in. Zero on-boarding and very little support. Systems archaic and very slow to move, with a lot of hand-balling to the US as an excuse not to enact important system changes. Management so nervously focused on sales that they don't seem to have the time or care to support or develop anyone. It's a shame that Wiley is quickly losing some of its best people.

Decent company but low pay & heavy workload

Pros

- Good benefits and working hours (9-4:30); they are also very flexible and understanding regarding work from home and family care time - Generally speaking, everyone is very professional, competent and hardworking. I found it very inspiring and motivating. - They just moved to a new office in Yonge/Eglington, brand new and very nice - The Canadian office is mid-size but Wiley US is quite big, with the head office in NYC – you might get a chance to go there for training/meetings

Cons

- Everyone, especially the people working in editorial and production, is overworked. Seriously overworked. - In addition to being overworked, employees are also underpaid. - The company is going through tough times (also due to the more general situation of the publishing industry) and restructuring, so it is quite unstable - All of the three points above really affect employees’ morale, which is generally quite low. People are demotivated and feel underappreciated - There aren’t many growth opportunities for young people, who for the most part end up leaving.
