Pros

- Provides higher pay then the market average for fresh graduate - Has flexible working hours - Opportunity to learn a lot of technology is you are in right team - High growth, in fact, a little bit too much. - Supports Employees in moving between departments

Cons

Well, this is gonna be a long list, but it's worth every minute reading. - Delusional board members: CEO, COO and every board members, high management personals used to believe (or at least that's what they want to show) that the company was the most innovative in the world, that the company could do impossible things nobody can achieve with absolutely no backing evidence of any great product. They constantly reminded employees once a month that they are the top notch on the market, that their engineers are better than those at top tech companies. On top of that, they hired thousands of fresh graduates (non CS) and make them code and design product with no real product engineer, as a result the products are full of bugs and development time took 4/5 times than usual. Hence delivery to customer failed and some cancelled the contract. Recently there has been a change in upper management and they are doing damage control since then. - Incompetent managers: Most managers don't have good management skills. Some of them got promoted to be manager just after 3 years of being engineer from entry level plus some are of non CS background. With lack of both technical and management knowledge, they could not make critical decision in how to proceed with the project. Almost all projects (I would say 90%) could not meet the deadline. - No real system architect: They don't hire any expert to design the architecture of the system (There is no such position). As the result, engineers have to take the task and come up with terrible designs, which cause a lot of mess in current development. During some iterations, the entire Jenkins and GitLab keep failing because of incapability of CI. - Not following industry standard: With most employees do not have CS background, instead of using UML and other standards of Software Development, they decided to put everything in spreed sheets. Without a unified format for those spreed sheets, it is impossible for engineers/managers to communicate. It might take up a lot of meetings in order to sort out a simple problem. - Pay no attention to system performance: Although the original intention is to achieve 100 ms in every services, they did not carefully evaluate the overall performance. Without experienced engineers to do code review, bad codes incrementally added up that ruin the whole system. There is completely no stress test. Although the system is distributed, engineers and QE normally only test as the system runs on a single machine. - Politics, a lot of politics: How you advance in you career is not decided by your talent and contribution but rather depends on your relationship with your boss. Your boss's decision is the one and only one that will affect your evaluation. All your teammates and colleagues' good words do not matter. - Wasteful use of employees: They do frequently restructure the organization of all departments (probably once a year). During the process, a lot of bad job allocation happened. E.g, assign engineers to do feature documentation, consultant to do coding, UI designers to do CI. Their philosophy is everyone is the same, and anyone can do anyone's tasks. - Recruitment: Somehow, they believe it is a good idea to recruit 1000 new graduates with no background of computer science/coding to become engineers (happens mostly in Japan). As the consequences, a large percentage of existing engineers can't even produce proper codes. "As long as they love the company and believe in our philosophy, they will overcome any obstacles", said a VP. - Career path: what career path? there is none. After being engineers for couple of years, you will automatically become manager, and steer away from tech to management, no other choices. After that, you have to attend meaningless meetings and write useless reports. - The company is struggling: Business is worse than ever (You can try to look for their financial report). They are basically surviving base on "Japanese use Japanese product" principal. Even that is slowly turning away from them. Recently they are cutting down people and slowing down the hiring process. - Good people are leaving: While the company is laying off people, some are leaving on their own as well. Almost all good engineers I know already left the company ( only a couple people from my batch are remained and I believe they will leave ASAP).

Pros

- High initial salary especially for fresh graduate. However, do take note that the salary is pegged on the ever-weakening Japanese Yen, so without consistent salary reviews you will find your pay decreasing every single month. - Flexible working hours, as long as overall you clock in the working hours as stipulated during the contract. - Opportunity for non-IT graduate to break into the IT Industry. You will spend the first 3 months learning the basics of front-end development + another 1 month of internal technology bootcamp, all by yourself. Depending on what you do with these fundamental knowledge in your FREE TIME (e.g. weekends) you may be able to truly break into the IT Industry.

Cons

- Non-existent training and guidance, especially in terms of technical know-hows. During the so-called training period, evaluators focus more on your "ideas and thinking" rather than coding skills. Hence, you may produce rubbish messy codes and still pass the training as long as the "idea is brilliant". During actual work (which, honestly, requires way more knowledge than basic JS, HTML, CSS, and jQuery learnt during training), expect even less guidance. Here, Team Leads got into management way too early that they are often the most detached from the code base out of everyone. Your peers may be knowledgeable, but the lack of motivation means they also produce the bare minimum. The company follows a "firefighting mentality" that focuses more on quick fixes and less on getting into the root problem. - Poor management. Having worked in SG Office, there is never a single moment where I am clear of the company's direction, goal, achievement, etc. All the CEO does is to keep harping on the so-called WORKS WAY; abstract nonsensical notions such as Just Think, No Scapegoating, and Breakthrough. During development, sudden feature requests can be thrown without any warning, disrupting any form of planning done by the Team Leads. Deadlines for these features are often short yet the specifications can change again and again throughout the course of development. - Diminishing salary. Evaluation is irregular and not objective. Worse, good evaluation does not mean you will get salary increase. In fact, you WILL get promoted, given more responsibility, but WITHOUT salary increase. These coupled with the ever-weakening Yen, mean many senior employees find themselves with decreasing pay month after month. - Good people are leaving. For the past 3 months, there is at least 1 "Farewell Email" received every single week. Critical members, and members who produces results are leaving because of the toxic working culture and lack of career progression. Those who are left behind are either actively looking for other opportunities, or stuck because they are unable to move on. At the same time, they are struggling to cope with the demands of the upper management owing to the messy code base and lack of support from the now-gone experienced members. - Nobody cares about the product anymore. Some people may put "chill working environment" as a positive, but actually this is due to the fact that nobody is proud of what they are doing anymore. There is no internal motivation, no sense of pride, and not sense of purpose. Every single bug fix, function addition, etc are done solely because the upper management requested it.

Cons

Though this company calls itself a global organization but is not so in any manner. All the higher positions are mostly occupied by native members, despite they knowing very little about the tech or business flow. In fact, some are a liability to the company. Without prior knowledge they force the subordinates to work on tasks and makes them change the product at the last moment. Some of the managers do not practice to take charge in case of a failed product and accuse their subordinates. Though some of the senior members(managers) have less/zero idea about certain projects, they do not take the effort to learn anything new. To save themselves from having an ill reputation, they pressurize their subordinates and make their life difficult beyond imagination. Their evaluation system is one of the worst system to evaluate employees. They evaluate based on who can appeal more by talking and show-off rather than work. Once they form an opinion about an employee, they do not change their minds despite the hard work put.Neither do they give good advice to members for improvement nor do they support them. Communication GAP is HUGE. It is not just the language barrier. Instead they have a mind barrier where they do not communicate openly. The management makes false promises to the employees and one fine day fires them. Some current employees are on the verge of depression. This company has drained off the funds initially and now to cut cost are firing foreign employees. It does nothing to deal with so many undeserving old native employees. Initially they did mass hiring, then they did mass firing-but just for foreigners. Because of terrible knowledge transfer, bad management, unskilled senior employees some of the products have become a mess. Due to decreasing funds and "No Firing" policy in Japan, the native employees in Singapore are also safe. The foreign employees are at their mercy. Despite many appeals from foreign employees, the management pays no attention for the improvement of the work culture. Life is hell here and the management condition is beyond repair.
