Pros

Some people who are still there do genuinely care about the students.

Cons

The pay is significantly below the national average for this role. While I was there, some colleges had "specialist" career advisors that got paid much more. Most students didn't know they existed and still came to the main career advising office, and the regular (generalist) career advisors (like me) helped them. This was a failure of management. I got sick of being a doormat and left.
