Pros

Benefits are reasonable, if you don't mind a high deductible. You'll learn a lot about how to navigate the painful nature of a corporate environment. You can wear jeans depending on where your office is.

Cons

This place is so corporate that it is stifling. Good leaders who hold under performing employees accountable won't last. Over performing employees will get tired of it and leave. Directors who micromanage, set hours, require mandatory overtime, etc. all make Xcel an unappealing choice in a state full of companies who offer flex time, work from home and other options aligned with the year 2019 instead of 1950. Lip service is great, but employees at Xcel are just numbers, particularly in the back office. Lots of overlapping projects with lack of communication and an exceptional knack for making things chaotic. Lots of unnecessary travel to Minnesota when a conference call would suffice. Outsourced IT is a joke. Onboarding new employees is painful. By the time Xcel is done with the background check, many candidates have found other opportunities.

Pros

Fantastic, welcoming people throughout the department Exciting work that contributes to Xcel's goal of going carbon free Good new employee orientation Clear that they are interested in continuing to invest in me Clear that they have high expectation Lots of communication with manager and other teams

Cons

Very little onboarding as far as basic administrative details (submitting time sheets, who to ask for supplies, how to get required equipment, even how to properly acquire and operate workstation equipment). As a result, new hires spend a lot of time on figuring these things out instead of focusing on getting up to speed on their new work. Also, it would be good if PTO was contingent at least somewhat on the individiual's career experience, not just their tenure with the company.
