Nepotism and Cronyism Rule

Pros

It is a regulated utility, so profits are guaranteed if they do the right things.

Cons

Executive leadership lacks integrity and rarely does the right thing. They claim trustworthy is a core value of the company, but nobody in the c-suite is honest. There is nepotism everywhere at Xcel. Board members get their friends and family corporate jobs that they are not qualified for. I was told during an interview that they look for engineers with family connections at Xcel. Job promotions are not based on merit or hard work. Nobody moves across departments at Xcel. Each department is a tribe where tribe members know the best way to advancement is to be a relative or crony of their senior leader. Merit and hard work have nothing to do with how employees are evaluated and promoted. Xcel is the largest organization I have ever worked for, and I have seen far more nepotism than anywhere else. They make a regular practice of retaliating on employees if they make a complaint to their compliance line. The compliance line is there to protect weak leadership from accountability.

Pros

The people are great! I enjoy the work I’m doing and know I’m making a difference.

Cons

Leadership: from my direct manager, to the executive over my business area, to our executive team - do not recognize me or my teams extraordinary efforts and positive outcomes. There is NO positive feedback, no monetary reward, no “thank you.” Yet, my work is marketed as THEIR biggest success for the year to the board and peer executives. The executive team continues cutting costs at the employee level but not the executive level. Why are they exempt from the cost cutting? Why are they still getting bonuses, raises, and perks when employee recognition is cut, bonuses will likely be cut next year, and we are working more bc we can’t replace people who have left? Seems out of balance.

Pros

- Really talented and dedicated employees that want to do the right thing - Flexibility to work from home - Pension and 401k

Cons

Leadership continues to make it very challenging to work at Xcel. They cut bonuses to make earnings, on the heels of that have forced employees to return to the office while not saying why even though they acknowledge that productivity is at an all time high (many believe this is to force employees to leave instead of firing people). Leadership constantly talks about strategy while chaos continues and they just bring in another consultant company to "fix" it (where the actual strategy comes from). If you work here you are just a number to leadership as the most prized asset under leaders are FTEs.
