Pros

Some nice people to work with.

Cons

It's a good thing that Yardzen is a design company because outward appearances are all that matter to the leadership team. During your interview, you will meet a small selection of people who can sell low pay, a lack of work-life balance, and a company running on fumes as an opportunity. As soon as you start, you will find that the founders don't practice the work-life balance they preach and enjoy asking for large projects on Friday that are due on Monday. If you live within three hours of the SF Bay Area, they will also guilt you into doing team-building hikes and dinners because the veneer of team cohesion is more important than putting in the work required for a healthy, functioning workplace. They will pay for the dinner but not your mileage or time. You will meet talented, easygoing people, and, after just a few weeks, you will wonder why they are at Yardzen. For some time, leadership was able to float constant chaos and bad behavior from the founders as a regular part of a rapidly growing startup and temper dissatisfaction with loyalty claims and big promises to take care of people once we made it. However, the first road bump showed that the executive team is only loyal to themselves. Like many other reviews have pointed out, a panicked C-team when on a tremendous hiring spree only to have to lay off ~30% of the company. Of course - no one in leadership was affected, and they misled everyone working at Yardzen about their financial solvency until some of the biggest cheerleaders for Yardzen found themselves laid off via revoked log-in access. That led to our current lopsided hierarchy - managers with almost no one to manage. Key positions go without backfills because Yardzen can't afford to fill them. There are no directors in HR or Product - if that's not a red flag, I don't know what is.

Terrible Place To Work

Pros

Stipends for wellness, internet and phone. Unlimited PTO (just be sure you take it!) Giving work life balance 5 stars because I was told to do less work than the 40 hours I was doing after asking for a raise + citing fair market research country, state, city and industry wide.

Cons

99.9% of everything. I was told when I was hired that there would be bonus potential. That was a lie. My reviews weren’t based on fact, no actionable or measurable feedback on what I could do to improve the scores. While I voiced I didn’t agree, I nodded along and tried to show improvement then was belittled for watching my own back. CYA! The leadership has no formal training, mostly just promoted after a year with no developmental insight. (Literally I did most of one ‘manager’s’ job in the months leading up to their promotion while they made mistake after mistake.) They’ll ask you to do more work and if you stand up for yourself asking for a raise or bonus to take on additional responsibilities - you’ll be gaslit and threatened. My boss hated me because she couldn’t sway me into agreeing with her and her bad choices. Additionally, I wasn’t listened to and though I told my direct boss that certain types of behavior made me uncomfortable - she continued to do them, calling it a growth experience. Turnover is HIGH. They’ve also asked most of their employees to give the favorable reviews.

Great People, Poor Execution

Pros

Yardzen has a great team of alot of talented individuals. Their recruitment team has a knack for finding people that have a positive energy and passion for what they do. I feel the company did genuinely try to make the team feel connected even though the remote workforce was spread across the United States through events and meetings. I found interactions with management to be generally positive even after informing them I would be leaving the company. As a relatively new company they are always looking for new ideas and are quick to pivot as new ideas come to the table.

Cons

The Principal designers have a unique position within the company . Your primary role is to facilitate design discussions (via video conference) with clients that are generally unsatisfied with their design and relay design those changes back to the designer for the project through call notes and drawings. Even as someone coming with 5+ years of traditional landscape architecture experience in addition to remote work experience and customer service experience, I found the workload unmanageable. Most days consisted well beyond 8 hours to accommodate the 5 scheduled client meetings and associated follow up work. The company is firmly a technology company with a focus on landscape design as opposed to a landscape design company with technology as a means to support the business. This is not inherently a bad business model but it does put the role of Principal designer in a difficult position to both perform work duties and serve as a sort of catch all for design related issues that other staff do not have the education or experience to easily handle. This is not to take away for the great staff at Yardzen but experience in the landscape design field is obviously important to help resolve certain issues that arise.
