Pros

Year Up lives by its mission and I’ve appreciated the opportunity to work with some of the brightest people ever. Great benefits and structure- enjoyed the flexibility, the career development I had and the camaraderie.

Cons

Year Up will not take care of you. Year Up likes beating around the bush and not being straightforward with decisions that impact it’s people. Put all their energy into the wrong aspects but rarely take feedback from their employees (even if they’re a feedback culture). Spends too much time trying to innovate new models that don’t deliver, encourages staff to take on extra roles without compensation, and when you are out the door, try to shower you with gratitude. If you decide to work here, know the organization will do little for you but will say they have PD funds and a great mission.

Pros

This is the most interesting and strangest places I've ever worked at. The students will inspire you to work harder, because they are eager to achieve their life goals. Some of the brightest, hard-working, and intelligent young adults I've had the pleasure of serving. Built strong lasting relationships with students and alums. The CEO is a man of true conviction, and integrity.

Cons

Year Up has the potential to be one of the most life-changing organizations for young adults in America. However, during my two years there; eight men of color left or got fired from the company. Not to mention, other employees who jumped ship due to low-pay, office politics, and "color-blind" racism. This isn't a good look when the students can easily point-out how staff don't hold themselves to the same standards that they hold the students too. In addition, personally dealing with being accused of sexism, and "color blind" prejudice it made it a challenging place. The students realized that their true allies were leaving the organization en masse. It appears that this organization had no problem with letting people of color build up the organization, but made it less diverse once it had been truly established.

Pros

Passionate staff members who care about the mission of the Year Up establishment. Such wonderful, charismatic, and potential filled students who work hard to earn their internships and opportunities.

Cons

The worst management I have ever encountered in my life. Management does not respect its employees. Management tries to uphold the establishment's professional values but do not care about the committment and diligence of their workers, only the upward mobility they are able to provide. Management is the saddest excuse for a group of adults trying to keep it together.
