Toxic PIP culture

Pros

1. unlimited time off ( I doubt you will use more than 15 days per year because if anything goes wrong, that will fall on you even when you are OOO, that is the expectation) 2. opportunities for promotion - I know people get promoted pretty fast if they are the superstar of the cohort and their salary will grow pretty fast 3. Get a full month of training on SQL python and database. 4. Get exposure to alternative data and how institutional investors use them

Cons

1.No work-life balance and extremely long hours. Your salary doesn't match your working hours. The company is very good at branding itself for its diversity and humanized culture and it allows unlimited paid time off. The review used to be straight 5.0 because of its cult-style culture and it would be so easy to identify who wrote the bad review, but I am glad to see more real comments coming out. In fact, you will find burnout so common across the company and people only complain under the table because of peer pressure. I didn't even get a chance to take a whole week off when I was still at the company and I still have to work 50% of the time while I was on vacation, and my friends find it ridiculous. This is because everyone / your manager is so occupied with his/her own plate of sh*t and no time to cover yours. 2. Toxic culture and expected 0 human errors. A lot of people are forced to quit jobs because they are considered underperforming, just because of one or two data errors. Almost no time and room for improvements from a lower bar. As one review mentioned, the company hired crazy but also fired a lot. 3. Lot of young managers who have barely any experience of managing other people. Don't expect a lot of help or advice from your manager. They are there to judge you and give you a rating. All the more experienced/older managers are promoted to high senior levels and the company is lacking appropriate training on how to be a good manager for the newbies. If you are not the top performer, you will find yourself at a minimum rating one day and forced to leave.

Dramatic shift in culture

Pros

Work from home flexibility. Working with strong talent and on a strong product. Good client base and overall reputation.

Cons

Regrettably, I find myself compelled to articulate my disappointment, as my initial optimism joining Yipit has been eclipsed by a profound transformation within the company, rendering it impossible for me to endorse it as a  good place to work. Yipit once boasted a myriad of positive attributes, including a culture characterized by ownership and accountability, the opportunity to collaborate with exceptional talent on a top-tier product, and a solid reputation that came with a host of job perks. However, the tides shifted dramatically when the company embarked on an aggressive hiring spree. This expansion encompassed the recruitment of numerous managers and the promotion of commendable individuals to middle management positions. Unfortunately, the proliferation of managerial roles has had a negative impact on the organization, manifesting in an unprecedented surge of micromanagement and a palpable decline in morale. There were also lay offs earlier in the year which affected morale and the overall workload of those left within the company. Many individuals elevated to senior management positions lack the requisite skill set, thereby creating confusion and transforming the work environment into a state of disarray. The strategic landscape undergoes daily fluctuations, rendering it arduous to keep pace, and a substantial portion of our time is now allocated to updating our managers for the sake of them providing updates, which becomes a game of telephone. The upper echelons of the company exhibit a lack of accountability, attributing any shortcomings in strategy or pricing to the sales team or macro economic environment. A notable number of newly promoted managers have been recruited from GLG. This practice has constrained opportunities for long-standing staff members who possess a deep understanding of the product at hand, curtailing the once-cherished meritocratic work environment and instating an unnecessary bureaucracy and cliquishness. On the whole, the ever-changing strategy perpetuates a sense of unease, leaving one apprehensive about being out of sync with the latest developments. Communication falters, and managers impose an insurmountable burden by incessantly demanding updates, leaving one to ponder how they allocate their own time. Despite the amount of surveys, no tangible action ensues. Rather than fostering a positive work environment, there is now increased hostility felt across the business.

What once was a great company to work

Pros

- Good product - Fully remote environment, lots of location flexibility

Cons

I turned down a FAANG job offer to join YipitData because I was eager to work under a leader who genuinely cared about his team's growth. His compassion and commitment to our development made the opportunity difficult to say no to. However, after multiple reorgs, teams have changed multiple times and it became clear that not all people managers at the company were suited for their roles. Following the 2022 layoffs, the company culture deteriorated significantly. Management lost focus, leading to teams scrambling to meet unrealistic goals. As a result, employees are burned out, compensation adjustments have lagged, and the once-great culture has been lost.
