Sinking Ship, worst place to work

Pros

product is decent, ok to work if you work on the tech side

Cons

- CEO has made misogynistic and racist comments, racism and sexism tolerated in the workplace - CEO has a big ego and thinks he is the most intelligent visionary known to man, his pride clouds judgement and he is disrespectful to employees - No employee loyalty, incredible disrespect, turnover is around 6 months despite what they tell you - No room for career growth - Senior positions can expect to be fired within a year. Don't leave your job because this pays more - For sales - commission structure makes it impossible to actually make commission -Favouritism is excessive and you learn quickly to not trust people who are favourites

Pros

I don't know if it's because of the communal struggle, but the employees are very tight knit (except for those in "management"). Ex-employees who have left ZL are always happier at their new job, but do mention one thing they miss - the people. Because of this, it's pretty easy to stay informed of the drama and shenanigans that happen - everyone shares everything with everyone (except for management). If you like to be part of (or observe) hilarious drama between several unique characters, ZL is definitely a great place to be. ZL is also a place you have to make for yourself - this is much easily done if you are either an American citizen (or have permanent residency status), male, or white. Bonus points of you fit all three criteria. The CEO knows how to hire. The downside? He doesn't know how to make them stay. Besides the internal work environment, though, the work itself can be rewarding if you manage to prove yourself in an area that excites you. If you're successful (and are good at navigating the politics of childish middle aged men), it's a great experience - you get to interact with C-level executives of Fortune 1000 companies, acquire invaluable knowledge and skills, and take on a lot of responsibility.

Cons

Some previous reviews mention that management is flat, therefore there's a lack of structure - but the attempt to create a so-called "middle management" has had abysmal results. If anything, it prevented the talented people from getting their job done and enabled the lazy employees to hide behind the so-called new "processes." Compensation is not fair unless you've been at the company for at least 5 years. Threatening to leave is the most effective way to get a raise. There is no feedback or real reviews - so you have no idea on what basis you are getting a raise (or aren't). Long story short, loyalty is valued over any actual value you bring to the company. The CTO does not know how to hire. He's a genius developer, though. The engineering side is NOT a healthy environment - ESPECIALLY for females. I don't know how much I can emphasize that. Business side isn't as bad, but has its own issues. Oh, also - don't even think about working here if you were hoping to ever get a green card. I've personally heard the CTO call a prospective interview candidate "a flight risk" because they already had a green card (i.e. they will quit once they realize they don't want to work here anymore).

Pros

There are some great people at ZL. Working with many of the energetic and lively people there was a pleasure. This company is very flat, everyone reports either to the CEO or the CTO, or the office manager who is the CEO's wife. The CTO is a competent engineering leader.

Cons

Other than the CTO the senior leadership is not great. Pennywise and pound foolish is the perfect description of the culture and style that pervades here. In its entire history this company has never managed to keep any non-founding member of the executive team for more than 18 months, not a VP Marketing, not a VP Sales, not a General Counsel. These execs are not all wrong. The 90% turnover, year over year in sales and marketing is also an indication of trouble emanating from the top.
