Pros

Having worked in the tech industry for over 20 years, I can honestly say I've never seen a workplace culture so curated and protected. Difference is celebrated, diversity is default, and good intention is always assumed. As a manager, I work hard to ensure that all are heard. Everyone on the leadership team, from the CEO on down, truly believe that a diverse, happy team is fundamental to the success of the company. Professional and career growth is actively supported. People switching roles, and even departments, is not uncommon. Funding is provided for conference attendance, and is easy to secure. "Take what you need" PTO is a terrific way to run things! Not only does it allow employees to define work/life balance for themselves, but it's an indicator of the level of trust and autonomy employees have. Compensation ranges are well-researched, and backed up with data. We know we're 'in market range' because the data says so, not just our impression or feelings. This also means we can prove that we pay equitably and fairly. Ultimately, what almost everyone here will say is that "It's the people" that make them happy here, and want to come back every day.

Cons

No workplace is perfect, and Zapproved is no exception. Major initiative changes are often poorly communicated. As such, there is a sense of 'change fatigue'. Engineers have historically felt yanked around, and frustrated when not allowed to complete and ship their work. As in most software companies, there is often a feeling of disconnect between the Sales and Marketing team and the Engineering team, and it frequently feels like we're not on the same page. The amount of tech debt is burdensome, and requires more hands-on engineering support than is ideal. We're improving all the time, but this is deeply problematic for us on multiple levels. I'm giving away my identity here, but the transgender health benefits are rock-bottom baseline, and belie a grossly misaligned understanding of the trans experience on the part of our insurance provider.

Steady decline in culture, product, and sanity

Pros

- Great PTO - Fun coworkers - Flexible working hours - Fun company events - Lots of beer (trust me, you will need it) If you have the right manager to protect you from the disorganized chaos of other teams or departments, Zapproved is a great place to work. Office managers do what they can to try and raise office morale.

Cons

- Generally poor and seemingly inexperienced management - Unreasonable deadlines - An expectation to work late nights and weekends to compensate for management's outrageous deadlines - Leadership is shaky and quick to cast blame, point fingers, and throw employees under the bus - Hemorrhaging of employees that are smart, talented, and trusted - Toxic working culture where no one trusts their job from one day to the next - Being critically underpaid is the status quo across departments to the degree that it is a frequent bitter in-joke amongst most employees - Employee hemorrhaging has led to losses of key team leaders, meaning that temporary replacements are requesting that work is constantly being redone and meetings are held redundantly on a daily basis - Employee dissatisfaction has turned a once fun office into a bitter, exhausted, paranoid office

First, thank you for your review. While I am not sure how to convey how saddened I am that this has been your experience at Zapproved, I am grateful for your honesty. I seek constant improvement for Zapproved and your input is valued and necessary. 3 years is a long time in the software life. I've only been here 2 years but looking back to where we were as a company as compared to where we are today leads me to believe you likely have made a huge impact in your role. Thank you. We're a company with tremendous ambition that pushes our limits every day. I won't deny that it pushes me personally. We're scaling across virtually every facet of our operation and that is only accelerating. But I also personally, deeply believe in a sustainable, joyous workplace that honors and supports the values and priorities we hold outside of work. I believe that you should be trusted to succeed, recognized and paid fairly for it, and supported by your leadership - all things that I know we strive to uphold as a company and on my team. While I can’t know if you are a part of the engineering organization based on your post, I do know you have not had an experience that reflects the values and environment that are important for me as a leader at Zapproved. This is something I would sincerely appreciate discussing with you. I encourage you to reach out. - Moses

Growing SaaS Company

Pros

Smart coworkers and flexible work environment (PTO, remote work when you need to) is great. Still seems like there's lots of opportunity for people to grow at Zapproved. I honestly I feel like my coworkers are trying to do the right thing. DE&I sessions and some of the newer sessions for employees (product demos, employee salary band presentation, agile training etc) feel like good steps as we "grow up". Management is empowered to advocate for/promote their team members.

Cons

High change environment ... it can be be draining to push through the ambiguity and team changes, especially when some teams are stretched thin. Budgets could be more transparent as it's hard to tell what initiatives teams/managers can and should spend money on.
