Pros

I have been with Zayo for five and a half years, not joining by acquisition, but by a choice to be part of building something. I think I, like many top performers in sales, am an entrepreneur at heart. Being able to build and develop my patch of accounts has been This is a small industry, and consolidation has made it even a smaller community. I believe that there is no other company in the industry that give its sales team more opportunity to find and source creative deals and strategic custom solutions. I always feel confident that Zayo is willing to embrace and support projects that set us apart from the competition. These are the deals that add the most long term value to the customer, greatest revenue and subsequently highest payouts. That confidence comes through and our customers really sense that we are trying to be true partners and advisors.

Cons

We move fast at Zayo. That Operational Tempo is one of the things that I love about being a part of this team. The main CON is that with all of the acquisitions that we have made, is that often times we are in the field with those that have not internalized that and may just not be wired that way. Zayo is not for everyone, and so I think that is what is often viewed as a CON let me explain. Every member in the front line sales team needs to not only be a specialist, but cross trained and prepared to be self sufficient in the field, - A hunter and a farmer - technically astute as an SE (including being able to first draft logical diagrams intelligently) - ability to work as a solutions architect with product managers - creative in financial deal structure - able to negotiate key legal & business terms and protect the companies interest (even if it means not giving the customer what they want) - project manager that stays engage in your sales implementation - Be prepared to assist in AR issues, we have the relationship with the customer, and I would rather AR issues come warmly from me before getting a call or e-mail from someone they don't know - Triage outages and issues post sales to mitigate disgruntled customers when things break If you like an adrenaline filled work experience that maximizes operational tempo, this is not a CON, if that is not your cup of tea, it is a con.

Pros

Great location in the heart of Boulder

Cons

Inexperienced college grads with 0 business, strategy or relevant organization knowledge are in management roles and not capable of providing direction, recommendations or any type of strategic direction. Change is good but this company makes large initiative and organizational changes on a weekly basis, not allowing time for success. Comp models changes if you are on target to make goal, Zayo is an extremely unethical and unorganized workplace environment. I'm shocked the business is making money with their lack of customer focus or employee retainment. I feel bad for the handful of smart young adults that are led to believe they will become rich from this company. and, the biggest shame is to see the Abovenet employees go. The small handful of good people were all from this company.

I truly am sorry your experience was so poor that you felt compelled to write such an extreme message. In employee surveys, amongst the most frequent feedback is that employees respect and enjoy their colleagues. They see their colleagues as smart, hard-working, and highly ethical. These comments have been persistent for multiple years. Based on your comments, your colleagues (including senior execs) have not earned your respect. I don’t know why this has been the case, but I do feel confident in our employees. We have a number of fairly recent college grads who are doing a fantastic job, including stepping into leadership roles. They are contributing while they are fighting their way up steep learning curves. We need both industry veterans and those with fresh ideas. We have a ton of great people who joined us from Abovenet. I rarely make a distinction between Abovenet versus non-Abovenet these days. I take issue, however, with a notion that Zayo has only a “small handful of good people” and that all of these small handful are from Abovenet. Since we have lots of legacy Abovenet, your comments seem to indicate you only view a small subset of them (and no one else) to be "good people". To the extent this belief shows up in your interactions with colleagues, it is not surprising that you disappointed in your relationships with your colleagues. I agree with you that Zayo is disorganized at times. This isn’t all bad, but it does need to continue its trek toward more organized and predictable processes. However, I must vehemently disagree with the suggestion that anyone at Zayo is unethical, let alone your generalized statement that “Zayo is extremely unethical”. It just simply is untrue. At Zayo, we are developing a diverse team of people who aspire to accomplish a lot together. It requires they support, trust, learn from, and can rely on one another. Based solely on your comments, you do not believe in your colleagues. Perhaps Zayo just isn't the right place for you. If you remain at Zayo, I hope you commit yourself to build trusting and respectful relationships with those around you -- without regard to whether they are legacy Abovenet, recent college grads, or from the planet Venus. If I can be of any help, please let me know.
