Not perfect, just real. And trying really hard.

Pros

I’ve worked in multiple high-performing organizations, both in nonprofits and in the private sector. What I learned is that building something ambitious is never clean or easy. Especially not in education, and especially not at scale. What makes Zeta different for me (and why I believe in the work) is that this is a place where people are really trying to do it the right way. Yes, expectations are high and the work is demanding. Things change fast. But people care about getting it right—both for students and for each other. Zeta doesn’t run on fear, or pretense, or hierarchy for hierarchy’s sake. I’ve seen leadership own mistakes, rethink decisions, and bring staff into hard conversations. I’ve never worked anywhere that tries so deliberately to build a healthy culture while moving at this speed. That doesn’t mean everyone experiences Zeta the same way. Some come in expecting only stability and structure, and instead find an organization in-motion that’s still evolving. I get it, especially for someone earlier in their career. But in my view, this is just the reality of trying to build something excellent and equitable at the same time. If you’re looking for easy, or perfect, this probably isn’t it. But if you want to work with people who are smart, committed, and seriously invested in doing right by children, Zeta is worth a look.

Cons

The pace of change can sometimes outrun internal systems and processes. You’ll occasionally find yourself figuring things out as you go, which isn’t ideal for everyone. While leadership is committed to building healthy culture, the rapid growth means some operational aspects are still catching up to the vision. Also, because expectations are genuinely high and the work matters so much, it can be easy to overcommit or feel like you’re never quite doing enough. The organization’s commitment to excellence is real, but that also means the pressure to deliver is constant.

Pros

kids are cute unlimited sick days (but you’re lowkey shamed for taking them)

Cons

honestly, there’s a lot. And I’ve brought these up with admin to address them, but have been kind of gaslit and offered really underwhelming explanations as to why my complaints are invalid. network is not responsive to teacher and student needs in order to address student gaps, teachers barely get preps and overextend themselves (schools are severely understaffed so teachers had to cover lunch and recess…), you are under fire if your “data” is below grade level or 100% of your students don’t have eyes on you, lots of toxic positivity, passive aggressiveness and conditional support, inexperienced teachers are expected to address behavioral concerns which should be addressed by behavioral specialists/deans, our “mindfulness retreats” are held in the school’s cafeteria and are a load of bull lol (maybe you could have used that retreat money to fund employee stipends for mental/physical health or let them take the rest of the day off… oh wait you got rid of the class pass benefit..), you only get TWO PTO days (and yes I get that there are breaks but only two???), your life WILL revolve around this job, you WILL get burnt out. honestly there’s so much…

Zeta Charter Schools Response

Thank you for taking the time to write this review of your experience at Zeta. We are glad that you enjoyed working with your students and that you benefited from our unlimited sick day policy. We are sorry to hear that you felt shamed; we prioritize the well-being of our staff and expect that managers honor the needs of each individual staff member. At Zeta, our Network team has systems in place so that we can understand and support the unique needs of each school community. We are continuing to use current and prior learnings from feedback surveys and conversations with teammates to continuously improve. We are deeply committed to learning and evolving. We know that we ask a lot of our team members at Zeta. This is because we are all deeply committed to our mission and the work of schooling is so important. To ensure every child and every team member is set up for success, we engage in extensive training, coaching, and feedback, and we use a data-driven approach. This immense effort is in service of equitable education delivered with love and commitment. We are proud to have two teachers in every classroom in order to maintain an average 15:1 student to teacher ratio across our schools. We believe that mindfulness is just as important for our teammates as it is for our students, and recognize the importance of reflection and recentering ourselves around our greater purpose throughout the year. We have been intentional about creating space for purposeful reflection for our staff. We welcome specific feedback about how these mindfulness retreats could be more impactful for our teammates. This year we were also excited to add free Talkspace therapy as a benefit for all our staff. While we were also disappointed to part ways with our ClassPass benefit, we are happy to now offer the FitOn benefit, which offers similar benefits including but not limited to credits toward fitness classes, unlimited access to digital health courses, condition management, health guides, and meal plans and recipes. School staff have generous breaks throughout the school year in alignment with the school calendar. We offer an additional 2 days for outside of school closure days and sick days because we understand there are inevitable personal matters that come up. We greatly appreciate your raising these concerns and value the hard work and contributions you have made during your time at Zeta. We are sorry that it didn’t work out, and wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Time for Leadership Change

Pros

Hard-working colleagues and wonderful children

Cons

There is a fallacy promoted at Zeta from the CEO that working here is like being on a Lord of the Rings type quest and all that matters is persevering and fighting onwards. This may have been helpful for Zeta as a small organization as it rode its CEO's reputation to gaining charters but as the comments on this website show, there is currently massive turnover and dysfunction, and it all stems from the top. Do yourself a favor and CALL SOMEONE who works at Zeta before you accept the job. Then CALL SOMEONE WHO USED TO WORK at Zeta. The CEO is well-known to disparage current and former employees, revealing not strength but a deep insecurity. Goals and shifting deliverables are given at the last minute as leadership lacks the focus and discipline (and experience) to lead Zeta at its current size. Anyone who doesn't drink the kool-aid is deemed unsupportive of children - what? For real? C'mon now - stop playing these egomaniac games and stop insulting hard-working educators. Leaderships lack of focus and professionalism does not mean that those who work hard for children at Zeta or elsewhere are bad people. It's easiest to describe the leadership style of the CEO with an excerpt from "The Emperor's New Clothes" So off went the Emperor in procession under his splendid canopy. Everyone in the streets and the windows said, “Oh, how fine are the Emperor’s new clothes! Don’t they fit him to perfection? And see his long train!” Nobody would confess that he couldn’t see anything, for that would prove him either unfit for his position, or a fool. No costume the Emperor had worn before was ever such a complete success. “But he hasn’t got anything on,” a little child said. “Did you ever hear such innocent prattle?” said its father. And one person whispered to another what the child had said, “He hasn’t anything on. A child says he hasn’t anything on.” “But he hasn’t got anything on!” the whole town cried out at last. The Emperor shivered, for he suspected they were right. But he thought, “This procession has got to go on.” So he walked more proudly than ever, as his noblemen held high the train that wasn’t there at all.
