Pros

Some teams are great here and make work fun

Cons

Management is terrible. There is no connection between how every manager is dictating their reports and there is a lack of consistency. They say unlimited PTOs but actually they count them so its not really a benefit, its actually a loss for the employee. Please keep that in mind! Unlimited PTO is a scam here. Some Directors at this company have no biotech industry experience, they lead the decision meetings and its the team that suffers. 1:1s are never about career advancement or "Whats working and whats not working". Some teams have a flat organization and this bothers and hinders how things are done but because complaining to HR or upper management is just going to end up anywhere but good decisions for the employee, people have stopped making HR complaints or getting skip levels to discuss these problems. You spend more than 10 hours a day and sometimes weekends (and late weekend nights) getting stuff done for this company but they don't value it. Upper management is not interested in listening to these employees who have been working at the company for 2, 3, 4, 5 years. This does not motivate us.. Some of us used to be emotionally invested in the company but looking at how you get repaid for it, doesn't even seem worth it. Poor Management, Duplicate processes, bureaucracy, Plenty of micro managing... thats part of the growing Zymergen since 2018 and the upper management doesn't even bother to work with their Directors/Sr Directors to get this right. This is really sad.

Pros

Exec team seems appears to be serious making changes

Cons

This place might be a good place to work for in a few years. Right now? It isn’t. I haven’t learned anything or developed my career. I do the job a toddler could do. My manager is completely clueless about what their direct reports do and completely uninterested in learning or developing us. If I call out my job won’t get done at all because again, my manager who I report to is uninterested about my job and hasn’t even volunteered to even shadow me. My department is a daily soap opera. No intervention has occurred while we keep losing great talent. Maybe it’ll be good in a few years time but right now I don’t go a day without regretting accepting this job offer.

Pros

The best part of working at Zymergen is the coworkers you will have. Everyone I worked with on a daily basis were amazing people. People are very supportive and willing to help you if you need it. Free snacks are pretty awesome too.

Cons

For the first few years I worked there the contracts coming in from the busniess team were a joke. They had such tight, almost unmanageable deadlines. It seemed like no one consulted a scientist to see how long work would actually take, causing a lot of stress to be placed on the research teams to meet the deadlines (which often did not happen). There is no good training for managers so there is a good chance you will end up with a manager who is not very good, or who only cares about the company but not the employee. I was hired to work with a specific type of research, which is the reason I took the job, but then when I was hired I never got a chance to work on it at all. Research associates were often left out of important meetins regarding work to do with their projects. Even when they had more knowledge and experience that the Scientists on that particular work.
