Pros

- Remote first - Team is generally built of very capable and clever people - Well designed product with a good user experience

Cons

- Limited experience within the leadership team, lack of assumed responsibility - Ineffective at allocating resources, refusal to hire into teams that are required to grow, e.g. marketing - Still distracted by shiny things rather than focusing on growth, many products within the company yet the priorities are still hazy despite a recent heavy restructure - Easy to coast, i.e. put little effort in and remain unnoticed

Beware Founder's syndrome!

Pros

* Recent leadership change * Re-focusing on core product * Getting control of the financials * Remote only

Cons

If one was to glance over previous (negative) reviews, a common theme would become apparent - balena suffered from a toxic management culture. Except, balena is a bit weird and there are no managers here. So how come the toxicity? The answer is "founderitis". Founder's syndrome (also founderitis) is the difficulty faced by organizations, and in particular young companies such as start-ups, where one or more founders maintain disproportionate power and influence following the effective initial establishment of the organization, leading to a wide range of problems. You can read more about it on Wikipedia. So basically, until the beginning on 2023, balena was unable to grow up from its nine year long start-up phase due to being lead by the wrong type of people - people, who have been instrumental at getting it and the associated technology off the ground, but not great at making it grow into an actual successful business. From now on, balena is led by a team of people who recognise, that to become a successful business, we need to stay focused, ensure we are solvent and by doing all the other things that create a positive place to work. We should also be aware of our blindspots, being a technology company - not all problems can be fixed with technology.

Pros

Truly remote-first culture of fully open communication which facilitates and promotes questioning of any decisions that are made by anyone if they aren't clear. The company has been built from the ground up to be remote so I've never ever felt like an outsider and always have access to everything I need. The ability to have open discussions to ensure that we're doing things in the best way we possibly can. We are solving hard problems and creating things that don't exist anywhere else; it's not always easy but very rewarding. Our CEO has a clear vision of the direction in which the company should head, it's awesome to work somewhere where we know what we want to do, and the team has the freedom to use their individual skillsets to help achieve that wherever they feel they can offer the most value. The architecture is thought out and designed with the entire company as one organisation in mind (the way it should be), to make sure all projects and services are integrated where possible. Flat hierarchy means that you have the freedom to take ownership of the things that matter to you most; if you want to drive a particular thing forward you can take the initiative and feel supported. Guidance is always available if needed. I'm surrounded every day by countless talented people who are all outstanding at what they do. It feels like the whole team is in a big ship and we're all rowing in the same direction to build something great.

Cons

All the people I love working with every day are scattered around the world and I only get to see most of them in person once a year, but the benefits of remote working far outweigh the cons for me.
