Pros

-Work from home -benefits start beginning of start date -diversity

Cons

-The training is quite extensive. 8 weeks in total. It's a lot... a lot of nothing. Trainers talk AT you for 8 hours with their 30-100 page slide deck with no other way to teach their material. No activities, lack of creativity when it comes to educating their trainees. People learn different ways, trainers need to adopt several new training techniques, especially for those who work remote. There was an 88 page slide deck to learn about Alexa, a total of 5 hours. Imagine being talked at for 5 hours straight where the trainer only reads off the slides. -It's obvious the trainers find the training grueling based on their tone of voice and lack of excitement. Sometimes it sounds like a chore coming from their underlining comments. I don't blame them feeling this way because really, who wants to actually present a 50 page slide deck about heating and cooling? On the flip side, this heavily affects the success of the new employees. Get people who actually want to make an impact. -Every trainer makes you feel bad about the extensive training process because their experience was: "I got x days/weeks to learn about ecobee and I did fine!". There's a difference between getting in-person training and working along side with your colleague vs working from home, receiving little to no communication from your team, and no hands on training. -During a Functional Skills Assessment call with my supervisor, my result was around 60%, when on the same call, Quality Assurance scored me at over 90%. The discrepancy does not make any sense. -Trainers emphasis on asking probing questions when helping customers on the phone but the trainer's only probing questions to the trainees are "do you have any questions?" after talking at you for hours on end. If the content is overwhelming, dense and not engaging, no one will have any questions. There should be an investment on teaching the trainers how to effectively train and educate their new employees. -Being in the tech support role for at least a year in order to move up or switch from calls to email/chat support. -$45k salary in today's market is a joke. $21/hr to deal with your own anxiety is not worth your well being. -Disregarding "anxiety" from the new employees by stating "you'll get the hang of it!". Supervisors & trainers need to be able to decipher this by having weekly 1:1s with the staff to get a better insight on the employee's journey. This shows a complete lack of empathy (ironically, we are taught to have empathy for our customers).

Pros

- there are smart people at ecobee and lots of hardworking individuals - they had some fun events: hackathons, team outings, etc - the branding and marketing strategy you get to see is really cool. ecobee is decently transparent about the strategy in each department, and it's fun to learn about - the downtown Toronto office at Sugar Beach is a little out of the way, but really nice. The couches with views of the lake are a very relaxing place to be when you're feeling a little stressed - the web and ML teams seemed like they had a good time, but that's speaking from an outsider's perspective - great for co-op students. They give their co-op students full-time employee-type projects, offering a lot of responsibility for a virtually blameless position. I met and mentored lot of great co-op students at ecobee. My only advice to them is to try not to get stressed by the responsibility of their tasks. Enjoy the co-op events and remember that ecobee is getting highly valuable free labour from your co-op employment - personally, I really enjoyed having the option for volunteer days, although there was an unfortunate stigma that I wasn't getting enough work done if I took them - there are some nice people that will genuinely help you out. I have been given good advice by some of my peers (though most of them have left by now). And there were a couple of times that I was in a potentially hairy situation (loosely related to work), and I felt ecobee had my back.

Cons

speaking for the embedded department especially: - zero room for growth without working even more overtime. You want to switch teams? Good luck, you'll need to prove you know everything about their job while doing yours at the same time, with no flexibility on your current expected output. "Come earlier or stay later" they suggest, even though you already do that for your current role. - Want a promotion? The career roadmap for the role asks for much more than employees actually do in their current roles, where the top-level is supposed to be an engineer who is good at literally everything - the most empathetic, humble, kind, public speaking, biggest expert in multiple technologies, jesus qualities, and insane work output. No room for error there. Performance reviews have managers bringing out counter arguments that are basically "you did this one thing imperfectly this one time 4 months ago". - work that is done to optimize the current tech or remove process blockers is generally only accepted if you work on it after-hours. Otherwise it will be held against you as evidence that you aren't performing well. - if you don't get the salary you wanted when you signed, have fun trying to get a raise. My coworker worked their a** off for years, and then I started at a MUCH higher salary then them despite having less experience. And it's not that they didn't try to ask for a raise. It was just the same BS answer every time they asked - on a company level, uppermost management is constantly stressed and highly emotional, prone to public breakdowns. It creates this undertone of drama and a cycle of...well, craziness. If you drink the Kool-Aid you might be in for a wild time. - also someone else in here mentioned HR gossip: I can confirm this is 100% true. I went to my HR Business Rep for my team about a personal issue, and soon after I heard from a friend who got hired that the recruiter told them things from my "confidential" conversation. My HRBP was completely unprofessional when I confronted her about it, denying that my privacy was violated and asking why it mattered if people knew.

Pros

Great people to work with, nice office, free snacks (if you like stuffing your face with salt and sugar) , and a fancy coffee machine. As you can see, all perks are superficial. Just like the rest of this company.

Cons

I won't go too deep as most of the dirt on this company has already been said by others who left before me. Bottomline, DO NOT WORK HERE. They will promise you "the moon" and give you a dirty piece of rock in return for all your hard work and effort. "You want a better and livable schedule? Great! Here's a scheduling software we have no idea how to use to "automate" it for us. So that WE (tech support management) don't need to work on a scheduling strategy PLUS it's automated so you can't blame us for you working 6 days a week! Awesome. " Management here is so extremely insecure of their abilities, they constantly promote like-minded yes men (rarely women), insecure individuals who will happily rat on their co-workers to get a juicy promotion. And that's even IF they post the job openning for people to apply instead of just picking one out of the lot of favorites. If a relative dies or if you're planning on getting married and need a longer time off, you're better of just quitting. The amount of work they ask you to do just to get some pay for the time you'll be off, even while mourning the death of an immediate relative, is ungodly and downright disrespectful. I've put off having to write this because the thought of my experience here, the disrespect from management towards me and my peers, makes my blood boil. This company's tendency to overpromise goes beyond their products, the same treatment is given to their employees as well. Particularly to those in the front lines. Do yourselves a favor and look elsewhere. There's lots of better jobs out there that will treat you better.
