Pros

Just the snacks and free drinks

Cons

Pretty much everything. The dynamic of the job, the treatement of their employees (especially if you were not a favorite)..and just the bogus excuses they made to end up firing talented and hard working people. Lol guess what? You needed to be a really big fan of the NBA to get along with managers.. not even kidding. Too much of favoritism..

Pros

- Great individual contributors who genuinely care and try to make life better. - Great for co-ops, associates and juniors who are looking to learn from experienced colleagues. - Business is doing great.

Cons

- Below market pay. - Substandard benefits. - No bonus, rrsp or any pay structure other pay than base salary. - Lack of diversity - Even less diverse management - Even less diverse executive team - Untrustworthy HR representatives - Silo'd - Mismanaged departments that change organization multiple times a year. - Unsupported leadership. - Will outsource projects and work while laying off workers all in the name of staying afloat even though it has been the most profitable two years in the company's recent history. - Mismanaged teams who change leadership multiple times a year. - Bleeding senior talent and unable to retain experienced engineers. - Learning is not a priority - No growth opportunities and will generally be judged according to your worst value that may not even have a direct impact to your work or is even part of your job description as opposed to the value you bring to and achieve for the organization. - I think what disappoints me the most is ecobee talks the talk so well that it took me 3 years to figure out that it never walked the walk to begin with.

Pros

- there are smart people at ecobee and lots of hardworking individuals - they had some fun events: hackathons, team outings, etc - the branding and marketing strategy you get to see is really cool. ecobee is decently transparent about the strategy in each department, and it's fun to learn about - the downtown Toronto office at Sugar Beach is a little out of the way, but really nice. The couches with views of the lake are a very relaxing place to be when you're feeling a little stressed - the web and ML teams seemed like they had a good time, but that's speaking from an outsider's perspective - great for co-op students. They give their co-op students full-time employee-type projects, offering a lot of responsibility for a virtually blameless position. I met and mentored lot of great co-op students at ecobee. My only advice to them is to try not to get stressed by the responsibility of their tasks. Enjoy the co-op events and remember that ecobee is getting highly valuable free labour from your co-op employment - personally, I really enjoyed having the option for volunteer days, although there was an unfortunate stigma that I wasn't getting enough work done if I took them - there are some nice people that will genuinely help you out. I have been given good advice by some of my peers (though most of them have left by now). And there were a couple of times that I was in a potentially hairy situation (loosely related to work), and I felt ecobee had my back.

Cons

speaking for the embedded department especially: - zero room for growth without working even more overtime. You want to switch teams? Good luck, you'll need to prove you know everything about their job while doing yours at the same time, with no flexibility on your current expected output. "Come earlier or stay later" they suggest, even though you already do that for your current role. - Want a promotion? The career roadmap for the role asks for much more than employees actually do in their current roles, where the top-level is supposed to be an engineer who is good at literally everything - the most empathetic, humble, kind, public speaking, biggest expert in multiple technologies, jesus qualities, and insane work output. No room for error there. Performance reviews have managers bringing out counter arguments that are basically "you did this one thing imperfectly this one time 4 months ago". - work that is done to optimize the current tech or remove process blockers is generally only accepted if you work on it after-hours. Otherwise it will be held against you as evidence that you aren't performing well. - if you don't get the salary you wanted when you signed, have fun trying to get a raise. My coworker worked their a** off for years, and then I started at a MUCH higher salary then them despite having less experience. And it's not that they didn't try to ask for a raise. It was just the same BS answer every time they asked - on a company level, uppermost management is constantly stressed and highly emotional, prone to public breakdowns. It creates this undertone of drama and a cycle of...well, craziness. If you drink the Kool-Aid you might be in for a wild time. - also someone else in here mentioned HR gossip: I can confirm this is 100% true. I went to my HR Business Rep for my team about a personal issue, and soon after I heard from a friend who got hired that the recruiter told them things from my "confidential" conversation. My HRBP was completely unprofessional when I confronted her about it, denying that my privacy was violated and asking why it mattered if people knew.
