His presentation, “Progressing with Value-Based Care Initiatives in Northern California,” covered some of the great results we’ve achieved through our 42 Accountable Care Organizations across the state, including lower hospitalization rates and fewer Emergency Room visits. Torrie also discussed expanding access to community-based palliative care through innovative partnerships, as well as the dilemma that many ill patients face when it comes to treatment or hospice care. To help limit unnecessary harm to our members and encourage alternative therapies, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA)’s National Council of Physician and Pharmacist Executives (NCPE) has just announced that opioids should not be prescribed as first or second lines of pain therapy. This decision aligns with the CDC's recent guidelines, as well as our own ongoing Narcotics Safety Initiative that’s working to combat the opioid epidemic.

Our accountable care organization (ACO) collaboration with AppleCare Medical Group has created a results-oriented, advanced facility care program. Because of the better care that this integrated approach affords, we’ve reduced the average length of hospital stays by 20%, as well as the number of unnecessary patient visits to emergency departments.
