Slowly but surely, things are returning to normal (a new normal, more accurately). No doubt, every organization—including ours—is thinking long and hard about what’s best for its people. Empathy, flexibility and innovation are key. We are meeting our team members where they are. We also appreciate the importance of being together. Of working side by side with our fellow colleagues—and our clients. Last week, our Brazil office hosted a “Get Together Week” to celebrate its return to on-site operations. It was a chance for work friends to reconnect; for colleagues to meet their newest team members; and for everyone to enjoy a little bit of togetherness. To us, the tee shirt says it all: “We Are Better Together.” As we open more offices, our intention—as ever—is to foster an agile, resilient, safe and collaborative workplace for each and all of our team members.

Last Friday, more than 100 CRA colleagues from across the country came together for our first-ever event in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. Claudia Romo Edelman, founder of We Are All Human and The Hispanic Star, led a poignant discussion about the enormous impact the Hispanic community has had on the American economy—and its culture (including the significance behind the logo on the cookies provided to participants). During the talk, one of our colleagues asked, “What can I do to help empower colleagues who are part of this community?” That led to a powerful discussion about the importance of allyship in the workplace—something CRA is committed to fostering. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to both Claudia and Raquel Tamez, CRA’s Chief Inclusion and Engagement Officer, for facilitating this important, eye-opening conversation.

It’s hard to believe it’s been more than 18 months since COVID forced us to pivot to remote operations. In that time, we’ve learned many things: about the benefits (and challenges) of working virtually; about what it means to collaborate when you can’t share the same space; and about the incredible resilience of our team. As we begin our journey to welcoming everyone back to the office, we will be as thoughtful, conscientious, and collaborative as possible. We’re excited to be back together again and fully committed to doing so in a responsible and responsive way.

Like many organizations, we’ve endured our fair share of challenges these past 18 months: keeping our employees safe; the rapid transition to remote operations; the uncertainty surrounding the global economy. Thankfully, we’ve become better not in spite of these hurdles, but because of them. Why? Because of the strength, resilience and adaptability of our culture. When times got tough, we persevered. We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re getting there—together. Meera Kotak, Senior Associate, UK says: “Despite joining CRA in the midst of a pandemic lockdown, the firm’s strong culture and people quickly made me feel like part of the team—even while working remotely. CRA encourages you to explore, engage with and experience new ideas and opportunities, from cross-practice trainings and DE&I initiatives to partnership projects and novel thought-leadership. This not only enables diverse thoughts to thrive; it also provides a stimulating and positive working environment.”

Every day, our team of consultants works together to help clients tackle their most difficult challenges. It’s a truly collaborative effort, something we take great pride in here at CRA. We believe that in order to bring about real, positive change, you must be willing to challenge yourself—and be challenged by others—in a positive way. That’s how we grow. That’s how we evolve. And that’s how we ensure that our firm will continue to be a global leader in consulting services. Salman Hussain, MPH, Senior Associate, Life Sciences, Boston, says: “I joined the Life Sciences practice to help our biopharmaceutical clients bring life-changing therapies to market that will benefit patients all over the world. I love collaborating with and being challenged by my teammates. We truly strive to get the best out of one another, which allows us to solve even the most complex challenges—together.”

From our humble beginnings in a two-bedroom hotel suite in Cambridge, Massachusetts more than 50 years ago, thinking outside the box has been a hallmark of CRA. If we’re not willing to constantly improve and innovate, how can we truly support our clients? It’s a question that’s always on our minds. Which is why we’re always looking for ways to create a more collaborative, engaging and empowering experience for our team members. Matt Cormier, Consulting Associate, Toronto, says: “The culture at CRA is driven by an inherent desire to continuously learn and improve, and our DE&I efforts are no exception. During my three years at the firm, I’ve witnessed a major shift in this area—a combination of decisions made by senior leadership and initiatives spearheaded by staff at all levels.”

Study after study has shown that, when people feel valued—not just for the work they do, but for the person they are—the more engaged they are in their professional lives. Here at CRA, we take great pride in creating an environment where people are seen, heard, and empowered to be their best. To us, being a great company and a great place to work go hand in hand. Archana Sathappan, Consulting Associate, Forensic Services, Chicago, says: “Being an Indian woman, I am especially encouraged by CRA’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Since I joined the firm, there have been several DE&I initiatives, including one of my favorites: when all CRA employees were encouraged to update their signature blocks with a logo celebrating Pride Month. Ensuring all team members feel valued is one of the main reasons I love working here.”

For all our success as a firm—the clients we serve, our global footprint—it’s our team members who make CRA such an incredible organization. In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing testimonials from CRA team members around the world. Our goal is to shed some light on what it’s like to work at CRA—and what our team members find most rewarding about their roles. Here’s what Hitesh Chawda, Vice President, Global IT Service Delivery and Telecommunications, Boston, says about his time at CRA: “Having been part of the CRA family for over 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with talented individuals from all over the world—people I’m proud to call my colleagues. I’ve also had the opportunity to build a team that reflects the growing diversity of our firm. But the part of my job I really love is how those differing backgrounds contribute to rich, dynamic discussions—the kind that allow us to find the most creative solutions for our clients." At CRA, we’re fully committed to fostering a culture where everyone feels empowered—and cultivating a workforce that reflects the diversity and dynamism of the communities where we operate and serve. As part of our “Why I Joined CRA” series, we asked Danielle Bethea, a Senior Associate in Forensics based in New York, to share her perspective on what makes our firm such a unique place to work. She says: “CRA is a company that understands the mission of DE&I and how to advance it. It truly is a team environment—a global firm with a family-business feel. Being able to engage with industry-leading professionals of various identities and backgrounds makes the job so much more rewarding. When I see a similar melting pot at work as I do in my own neighborhood, that makes me feel empowered. Especially when those same professionals are rewarded for their hard work and achievements.” Interested in learning more about working at CRA? Visit: https://www.crai.com/careers/meet-cra/

CRA is growing, and we’re looking for the next generation of diverse, dynamic, intellectually curious talent to help lead us into the future. So what is it like to work at CRA? What do people here love most about their jobs? What inspires them? Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing testimonials from CRA employees around the world—to give you some deeper insight into what makes our firm so unique: the people. Here’s what Colomba Lyall, a Human Capital and DE&I Specialist in our London office, had to say about her experience at CRA: Working in both onboarding and DE&I, I have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with a lot of different people. I’m continuously reminded of the importance of being culturally curious and embracing people’s differences. We might be on the same team or in the same room, but our unique backgrounds and experiences allow us to consider a range of different perspectives which bolsters creativity and innovation. That’s the kind of environment I want to be a part of: a place where everyone is valued and feels safe and inspired to contribute.
