Cook Children’s Health Care System announced today it’s raising the minimum wage for its workforce to $16 per hour, up from $13.25. The new minimum wage takes effect on Oct. 10 and directly impacts approximately 630 employees. “We’re excited to be able to once again raise our minimum wage,” said Keith Holtz, Chief Administrative Officer. “This decision demonstrates our commitment to attracting top talent, providing a stronger living wage and remaining an employer of choice, as well as a leader in fair and equitable compensation.” #WeAreCookChildrens #MinimumWage #MinimumWageIncrease #Compensation #Benefits

In 2001, a young girl from Argentina sat in a Florida classroom that could best be described as completely foreign to her. But the obstacles she would face, particularly the language barrier, would not be unsurmountable. Even though she had to learn to understand and speak English that first year, immunologist Natalia Chaimowitz, M.D., Ph.D., proved herself quickly. Along with becoming bilingual and navigating the normal, sometimes turbulent, waters of high school, Dr. Chaimowitz walked away with a valuable lesson that she still applies to her life and career. "We must treat each other with respect because we are all important," she said. "I think that comes from those years when I was almost written off because I was 'just the girl who didn't speak English.' I want every person to know they have worth."

Three decades ago, Crystal Foster recovered at Cook Children’s Medical Center after she was shot on the playground at Sunrise Elementary School in Fort Worth. Crystal says the care she received is something she has always reciprocated in her nursing career. “I always think back to how well they took care of me," she said, "And I value that and make sure to model that in my work.”

For Jo Tilley, nurse practitioner at Cook Children’s Stroke Clinic, those more than 5,000 miles are what separated seven formative school years and her high school senior year. “I’m an Army brat,” Jo shared. “But when my dad retired, we settled in Alvarado. With the turning of a tassel atop a cap, an amazing group of eight young people became the first class of the Jane Justin School’s Upper School at the Child Study Center to be part of a diploma ceremony. We are so grateful for the opportunity to work with these students and even more so to their parents who have trusted us as we quite literally built the program from scratch. We couldn’t be more proud of them for this monumental accomplishment, which is a testament to years of dedication and hard work. Join us in congratulating these students and continue to root for them as they embark on their next great adventure.

"Preceptors are so important because they help students apply what they have learned in theory to clinical practice," he explained. It's those breakthroughs by his students that Jesus relishes. "To see a student struggling and then all of a sudden you see them catch on, it literally gives me chills," Jesus shared. "Preceptors are vital to the overall education and can help students discover their passion."
