Most often when a parent dials the main phone number at Cook Children's, they are doing so at a point when life isn't going perfectly. Call Center Representative Nelnora Johnson recognizes this and knows she and her fellow representatives must be the calm in the storm the family is living through. "In order to do this job effectively, you have to have a healthy amount of understanding," Nelnora said. "We must all listen actively and respond compassionately." Right now in North Texas, it can take months to get an appointment with a child psychologist. There simply aren’t enough to go around. The same is true for many parts of the country. At Cook Children’s, a new program within our Neighborhood Clinics (NHCs) aims to bring therapists directly to families in underserved communities. Read how this program has already helped nearly 400 patients with everything from mental health evaluations to counseling and education.

“Communication is a fundamental right and something that every person carries with them their entire lives,” Speech Pathologist Kiah Thorn said. Kiah recognizes the significance of her part in helping kids communicate and, with a hopeful tone in her own voice, she shared, “I feel very privileged because I will always find meaning in our work. Last week was Nurse Appreciation Week, and we spotlighted one of our great nurses! "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." This Tanzanian saying holds a special place in the heart of Barbara Peace, director of the Magnet Program at Cook Children’s. "This really is what I try to live by because we truly can go farther in life when we take like-minded people along with us," Barbara said. Bianka Soria-Olmos, D.O., a pediatrician at Cook Children's Pediatrics Haslet, is on a mission to inform and educate Hispanic community members about COVID-19. This population has been disproportionally affected by the virus since the beginning of the pandemic and she “will use all of the platforms at her disposal to discuss the pandemic with her beloved community, and she will continue to shine a light on a painful disparity that many refuse to see.
