In October 2023, we welcomed an exciting new addition to the community. The R.E.D Market is a new mobile grocery store that will connect families with food and other resources. The R.E.D Market was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Serve Denton this morning. R.E.D. is an acronym for Resources and Education Delivered, and represents the core mission of the partnership. Families in Denton, Wise and Cooke Counties now have more access to healthy food and resources through a new partnership between Cook Children’s, Tarrant Area Food Bank (TAFB) and H-E-B Hunger Relief.

Having a child in the hospital is tough on any family, but imagine navigating a hospital admission if English isn’t your first language. That’s the case for many families at Cook Children’s. To help in situations like this, a group of parents and Cook Children’s employees formed the Hispanic Family Advisory Council (HFAC) to advocate for Hispanic families, identify gaps in family centered, culturally congruent care experiences and empower Spanish-speaking parents to be partners in the care of their children. Two councilmembers, Lucía Nájera-Gartman and Lizdelia Piñon, Ed.D., share their families’ journeys to connect with and advocate for Spanish-speaking families admitted to the medical center:

In recent years, robots have emerged as invaluable tools in health care by performing everything from the routine task of delivering a patient meal to assisting in highly complex surgical procedures. Their efficiency and precision can help medical professionals save time and save lives. But a new type of robot ─ one capable of painting with artistry and expression ─ is helping patients at Cook Children’s Medical Center tap into their creativity as they navigate difficult diagnoses and circumstances. Meet Spikelangelo, or “Spike,” the painting robot who connects, creates and collaborates with patients:

Shalyn Coulombe, RN, of Cook Children’s Medical Center – Prosper says spreading joy is one of her favorite things to do. “I like to add a little happiness and smiles wherever I can,” Coulombe said. Lately, that place has been the windows of rooms in prep/recovery at Cook Children’s in Prosper so when patients are taken to their pre-operation room the first thing they see is a whimsical character. Coulombe draws characters such as Peaks the Dragon, Bluey, Olaf, Little Mermaid, Moana, Rapunzel and Mario. Her masterpieces have brought smiles to more than patients and passersby – they are a much-anticipated part of her coworkers’ days.
