Marty Knott, D.O., Ph.D. was AmieLynn’s primary surgeon during the historic procedure to separate conjoined twins Amie and Jamie at Cook Children’s Medical Center on Jan. 23, 2023. Although this was his first time separating conjoined twins, Dr. Knott brought experience in operating on chest wall deformities, congenital malformations of the abdomen and chest, abdominal wall defects, tumors, bowels and vascular anomalies. We spoke with Dr. Knott prior to the twins’ separation. Visit the link below to learn how he prepared for the surgery. “This is one of those cool examples where everybody in the hospital gets to come together and participate,” said Dr Knott. “A lot of what we do gets kind of divided into little chunks where there's not much interaction between us. This has required a lot of coordination from NICU, to the nurses who know them well, the respiratory therapists, the anesthesiologists, the surgeons, the plastic surgeons and all our staff. Everybody's getting to play a pretty important role, and I hope that everybody sees the importance of what they do."

José L. Iglesias, M.D., medical director of Pediatric Surgery, was the lead surgeon in the history-making surgery to separate conjoined twins #AmieAndJamie at Cook Children's Medical Center. He led the surgical team as they dedicated months to studying scans of the girls, building models of their anatomy, mapping out potential surgical solutions, preparing the operating room and rehearsing the carefully choreographed surgical procedure. “Our team at Cook Children’s was honored to bring together our collective expertise in treating high-risk infants and conducting complex surgery to help AmieLynn and JamieLynn reach this incredible milestone,” said Dr. Iglesias. “The separation surgery will give AmieLynn and JamieLynn better opportunities to improve their health and development, and to grow as the unique, individual little girls that they have been since birth, regardless of their physical connection as conjoined twins.” Get to know Dr. Iglesias by reading a conversation with him prior to the Jan. 23 separation surgery.

Magical, monumental and life-changing! On Jan. 23, 2023, a team of medical experts from multiple specialties collaborated to perform the first separation of conjoined twins, JamieLynn and AmieLynn, in Cook Children's Medical Center's 105-year history. The medical professionals were separated into two teams, one for each girl. Those in purple scrub hats belonged to JamieLynn’s squad, while Team AmieLynn donned the green. 💚💜 We want to acknowledge and celebrate the individuals who successfully performed this historic surgery at Cook Children's. JamieLynn Rae and AmieLynn Rose, 16-week-old sisters who were born under unusually challenging circumstances, made history Monday after becoming the first conjoined twins ever to be separated at Cook Children’s Medical Center following a successful 11-hour surgery. Countless hours were spent building a comprehensive medical team, studying scans of the twins, building models of their anatomy, mapping out potential surgical solutions, identifying the what-ifs, troubleshooting potential problems, inventorying equipment needed to accomplish the surgery, preparing the operating room (OR) and rehearsing the carefully choreographed surgical production. In March 2023, we’ll be opening the newest addition to the Cook Children’s Medical Center campus! The expansion will add 240,000 square feet and six new services to the existing Dodson Specialty Clinics building. “Our specialty clinics are experiencing increasing demand for services from a rapidly growing, diverse population,” said Veronica Tolley, vice president of Primary and Specialty Services at Cook Children's. “The Dodson Specialty Clinics expansion will accommodate this growth, while also allowing clinics to consolidate to one location which is a tremendous satisfier for our patient population.” While adding space for clinic growth, the expansion also will support the addition of a Peaks Tech Zone, a sibling center, a cafe, a pharmacy, retail space and a maternal/fetal medicine clinic.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) Week was January 22-28, 2023! During CRNA week, we celebrated and appreciated our registered nurses with specialized training in anesthesia. They excel in safely getting our patients sleeping and pain free and deliver incredible care before, during, and after procedures. CRNAs work collaboratively with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and proceduralists to ensure that each anesthetic meets the needs of each patient. CRNAs also respond to hospital emergencies. Cook Children’s has 47 CRNAs, with five more in the onboarding process, and they work in more than 45 locations. They are one of the largest groups of Advanced Practice Providers at Cook Children’s. CRNAs are involved in every anesthetic, from closed reductions of broken bones, to kidney transplants, to complicated congenital heart cases.
