CoorsTek announced that a development team from CoorsTek Membrane Sciences, in collaboration with international research partners, have successfully used ceramic membrane technology to develop a scalable hydrogen generator that makes hydrogen from electricity and fuels with near zero energy loss. The report published in an April issue of Science is promising news for use of hydrogen in fuel cell cars and other clean energy value chains. “Energy efficiency is key to the future of hydrogen as a clean fuel” says co-author Irene Yuste, chemical engineer at CoorsTek Membrane Sciences and PhD candidate at the University of Oslo. “Our work shows that protonic membranes can make hydrogen from ammonia, natural gas and biogas so efficiently that hydrogen fuel cell cars will have lower carbon footprint than electric cars charged from the electricity grid.” Authors of the report published in Science include scientists and engineers from CoorsTek Membrane Sciences, the University of Oslo and the research institute SINTEF in Norway, and the Instituto de Tecnología Química in Valencia, Spain.

The CoorsTek plant in Gumi, South Korea was presented with an award from the National Institute of Chemical Safety (NICS) in recognition of the facility’s exceptional safety protocols and best-in-class chemical accident prevention plan. The Gumi, South Korea plant, which provides a variety of high-performance ceramics engineered specifically for semiconductor processing applications (including PureSiC silicon carbides and PlasmaPure aluminas), a wide range of hazardous materials are used. Due to the extensive use of these materials, the plant is subject to regular inspections to review safety procedures and chemical spill prevention plans. Gumi employees passed last summer’s chemical safety inspection with marks so high that representatives from the NICS asked them to share best practices at a conference in November.
