The journey that any food or beverage product takes from farm-to-fork is often complex and faces a number of traceability challenges. This is despite the recent growth in consumer demand for transparency in raw material origins/sourcing and confidence in ethical labor practices, animal welfare, and other concerns. At all stages of the food and beverage supply chain – but particularly at the farm and grower level – many workers are vulnerable to poor working conditions, health and safety hazards, and in extreme cases, forced labor. Earlier this month, KnowTheChain released its annual benchmark report for the food and beverage industry. One of the areas of poorest performance in the benchmark is worker voice, in particular the lack of use of grievance mechanisms. To understand the risk to workers in agricultural supply chains workers need access to a trusted grievance mechanism. KnowTheChain released its 2020 Food & Beverage Benchmark Findings Report today, how does your company score? https://lnkd.in/gCDM8Ff “In its third benchmark on the sector, KnowTheChain finds that the majority of the 43 largest global food and beverage companies fail to address forced labor in their supply chains—a litmus test of minimum fair treatment of workers. The average score in the sector is 28/100, with a score range of 0 to 65. The small cluster of companies scoring more than 50/100 demonstrates that this failure is not inevitable, but, rather, a choice about how they do business...The sector scores lowest on the themes of Purchasing Practices (17/100) and Worker Voice (16/100), highlighting a failure to address central drivers of abuse—the primacy of price combined with worker disempowerment.” ELEVATE’s eLearning lesson on Responsible Purchasing is a good first step in driving company awareness of the connection between purchasing practices and working conditions. This year, we are now able to offer an app for real-time communication with workers.
