Bank donates nearly $500,000 in educational scholarships F&M Trust knows that a well-educated community is a healthy and prosperous one, and the bank has long been a supporter of programs and activities at local schools and universities. Since 2021, the bank has participated in Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program and provided more than $490,000 in scholarships for students and families in South Central Pennsylvania. More than 60 percent of the donations supported need-based scholarships. Through the EITC program, businesses can claim a percentage of donations to tuition-based schools as a credit that offsets their state tax bill. The donations support private schools, scholarship organizations, pre-K programs, and other educational enrichment initiatives. Through a partnership with Commonwealth Charitable Management, the bank has funded 916 scholarships across its six-county footprint in the past three years. More than $226,000 was contributed to fund 239 pre-kindergarten scholarships at 13 schools, including: More than $100,000 to fund 87 scholarships for students at YMCA programs in Chambersburg and Waynesboro More than $23,000 to fund 43 scholarships at St. John’s Nursery School in Chambersburg More than $14,000 to fund 15 scholarships at Dickinson College Children’s Center in Carlisle
F&M Trust donates $5,000 to support The Maryland Theatre’s Century Club F&M Trust recently donated $5,000 to The Maryland Theatre in support of its Century Club, which consists of community members who believe in the arts and have made a commitment to the historic preservation of the theater built in 1915. The bank’s five-year pledge will allow the theater in downtown Hagerstown, Maryland, to continue to present quality entertainment, educational, and cultural offerings to the community. “The bank’s support will contribute to our discounted facility fees that are provided to our 22 community partners such as schools, dance studios, local events and community theater,” said Jessica Green, executive director of the theater. “The donation will also support the ongoing preservation of the historic theater as she turns 110 years old in 2025.”

Libraries are pillars of our communities that provide a wide range of information, resources, and services to people of all ages. They play a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage and historical materials, and promote literacy and educational development. In the first quarter of 2024, F&M Trust donated $14,500 to three libraries in Cumberland County to help them sustain the many programs they offer and to assist them as they grow to serve the needs of future generations. “Libraries are not just somewhere we borrow books; they are places where we gather to explore, interact, and imagine,” F&M Trust President & CEO Tim Henry said. “The bank is proud to support these libraries and their efforts to inspire lifelong learning, advance literacy, and connect people with resources for knowledge, discovery, and enrichment.” • A $7,500 donation to John Graham Library in Newville will support the expansion of the historic building on Parsonage Street. The 30-foot-by-60-foot addition will increase capacity for the library’s larger events and provide additional shelf space for materials and resources. • A $5,000 donation to Bosler Memorial Library in Carlisle will support the SummerQuest and Music at Bosler programs, as well as provide Wi-Fi hotspots for community members without internet access. • A $2,000 donation to Joseph T. In February, Shippensburg University’s Office of Workforce Development hosted its first Introduction to Construction program designed for those seeking a career in the industry. The university partnered with F&M Trust for two years to develop the program and to recruit construction industry partners to teach the curriculum. The comprehensive four-day program for underemployed or unemployed adults prepared participants for entry-level roles in the field and included courses in construction fundamentals, site safety protocols, and industry-specific terminology. Participants in the program honed career-readiness skills such as resume building, interview preparation, and professional communication. “The construction industry in South Central Pennsylvania is growing. With a state and federal investment in infrastructure and economic growth in this region, construction jobs are going to steadily increase over the next 10 years,” said Lorelee Isbell, Associate Vice President, Career and Workforce Development, for Shippensburg University The program, which was open to 25 students, was supported by U.S. Sen. Bob Casey and made possible by a $275,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration. “This was a great partnership with many of our community employers and more than 40 nonprofit organizations,” said Laura Potthoff, Business Development Officer for F&M Trust. “Once businesses and their employees do well, then we all benefit as a community.”

Treasury Support Specialist Sami Attrill has been recognized as a Fraud Fighter for her efforts in assisting police to catch scammers who targeted an F&M Trust customer. Sami received a certificate noting that she went beyond the normal course of duties as an FSR III at the West Washington Street Community Office in Hagerstown while assisting the bank’s security department and the Washington County Sheriff's Office in an investigation that prevented significant loss to our customer. She also received a $25 Sheetz gift card. “This is an example of our Reach for MORE standards and our core values,” F&M Trust Chief Risk Officer Lorie Heckman said. “By being aware, asking questions, reaching out, and working as a team, it shows we are committed ‘to concern for our customers and the communities we serve.’”

Since 2016, the community bank headquartered in Chambersburg has observed Banktoberfest, a service project that contributes to the health, safety, and well-being of the communities the bank serves and those who live there. The annual fall event emphasizes team building among the bank's nearly 300 employees and displays one of the bank's core values - showing concern for others. "As a company that derives both its purpose and its profits from the communities we serve, it is important that we are always looking to give back in ways that strengthen our communities," said Tim Henry, president and CEO of F&M Trust. "Many times, we contribute through financial donations and investments, but other times we give back through the donation of our time and talents." In October 2023, bank employees spent a Wednesday afternoon on a Shippensburg farm, planting more than 500 trees and shrubs across 3 acres as part of a conservation effort led by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The riparian buffer that was created will increase water quality and reduce pollution in the bay's watershed, which encompasses six states and is home to more than 18 million people.
