TW: suicide, mental health. Melody started running to honor her niece, Mandy, who took her life at the age of 24. Running 5Ks to Mandy’s playlist helped her feel closer to her. Six years later, Mandy’s mother, Melody’s sister, took her life, too. So, Melody’s playlist expanded, adding her sister’s playlist into the mix, which meant she had to run farther. Now, Melody is running half marathons, even recruiting family members who are new to running to build a support network rooted in motivation. “I still run for loved ones lost, battling a disease or illness, and now, for me. My playlist is diverse to honor those I love who can’t run with me or be there at the finish.” Melody is our #ReasonsWeRun winner for the month of December. Thanks to Melody for sharing her story of why she runs and what keeps her going. We all have our reasons, what’s yours? Share your story at fleetfeet.com/reasons-we-run for a chance to win a $250 Fleet Feet gift card.

Anxiety and depression runs in Laura’s family. After losing her brother to suicide, working sedentary jobs and having panic attacks, she knew she needed to make a lifestyle change. “I started running because I feared that if I didn’t do something, my mental health and physical health would suffer.” In 2010, Laura went to her local Fleet Feet and joined a beginners’ 5K program. Spending time with an energetic, healthy group of people made a huge difference for her, with runs and walks that felt like group therapy sessions. “I’m more happy. I’m more willing to get out of my comfort zone,” Laura says. “I gained a community when I started running.” We all have our reasons. What’s yours? hashtag#ReasonsWeRun
