The first step is perhaps the most important one we ever take. #ReasonsWeRun is an invitation to share our unique stories about why we started running, to inspire our communities to get moving and to encourage each other to keep going. One step at a time. We all have our reasons. What’s yours? #ReasonsWeRun
Alison Mariella Désir is a runner, founder, activist, mother and advocate for racial justice in the running community. More recently, she’s an author who has taken her personal experiences in the running community and channeled them into her new book, “Running While Black.” Celebrating Black History Month, we published an excerpt from the memoir describing her experience of finally seeing Harlem Run become the Black running space she had dreamed of, after months of struggle to bring it to life. “And then there was this: No matter where we ran, white places—the West Side Highway, Central Park, the New York City Marathon—became our places, too. With every stride, we were in a community. This was the power of the third space, a sociocultural term used to describe a transformative place where oppressed people plot or find their liberation. A place of unity. A place where folks like me can exhale. A place where we belong.” Check out the link to read the full excerpt. #RunningChangesEverything #blackhistorymonth2023
Continuing our recognition of Black History Month, we hand the mic over to yoga instructor and Black Girls RUN! ambassador Adina Crawford with advice on how to nurture your mental health through yoga. Mental health is often an underemphasized topic in African American culture given the stigma associated with the subject. It’s important that we not only normalize conversations around mental health, but also seek new avenues to relieve stress. Finding the right resources to support your needs can be daunting, but taking it one step at a time can bring real progress. Yoga is one easily accessible solution. Check out the video to learn more.

As we continually recognize one of the most prominent figures of the civil rights movement in America, Martin Luther King Jr., we are shining a light on Civil Rights Race Series race director Vergil Chames and the Selma to Montgomery Relay — a relay through American civil rights history with a mission of education, economic development and health and wellness. Hosted by the Civil Rights Race Series, the race starts in Selma, Al., crossing the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge and continues along a 51-mile route through American civil rights history, ending in Montgomery, Alabama’s state capitol. This event commemorates the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery and the brave actions of civil rights activists to secure voting rights for Black Americans. “For a group of African American race directors, it’s significant to put on an event where athletes can see these points in American history,” says Chames. Athletes will also see the bus stop where Rosa Parks denied giving up her seat and Dexter Avenue Baptist Church where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., served as pastor from 1954 to 1960.
