Team GEI congratulates ecologist Mary Balsdon who co-authored an article – Effects of microplastics and nanoplastics on host–parasite interactions in aquatic environments – for the scientific journal, Oecologia. Mary and her co-author examined the potential effects of microplastics and nanoplastics on aquatic fauna, specifically the interactions between hosts and their parasites or pathogens. This included a literature survey and a three-week laboratory study. “Microplastics are a large environmental issue, and there are so many impacts on aquatic fauna and disease dynamics that are unknown. In our study we just scratched the surface of this problem by pairing a literature review with a lab study to determine patterns related to host resistance or tolerance,” said Mary. “Microplastics have complex and unpredictable effects on infectious disease dynamics, and there is an urgent need for further study on this important interaction within #aquatic systems.” Well done Mary! Team GEI enjoyed learning and sharing at last week’s Canadian Freshwater Mollusc Research Meeting in #Ontario, a meeting devoted to the study of freshwater molluscs in Canada and the #GreatLakes Region. Conversations during this meeting included current research on freshwater mussel distribution, sampling efforts, threats and limiting factors, mitigation and recovery, and ecotoxicology. Michelle Letourneau, Blair Kimble, and Meghan Martinski are just a few of our experts across North America who work with clients to manage challenges around molluscs/mussels and other aquatic species at risk. Meghan and Blair presented during the Mitigation and Recovery Actions session at this event, offering insight on the mussel relocation work being performed on the #Wisconsin River by GEI. We’ll be back in 2025 for the next meeting!

During this year’s Floodplain Management Association Annual Conference, #TeamGEI focused on reducing our #environmental impact and increasing our #social impact. Instead of swag, we committed to donating $5 for every business card dropped by attendees at GEI’s booth. The donation to the Hawaii Community Foundation supports their Maui Strong Fund. We thank everyone who stopped by our booth to support the cause. With your support, we donated $1,000, which we hope will help the communities on #Maui recover from the recent wildfires.
