The third and final day of the 2025 Great Hearts National Symposium for Classical Education at the Mission Palms Hotel was a fitting conclusion to this one-of-a-kind gathering that brought together educators, scholars, and advocates of classical learning. With the theme of “Cultivating Wonder” in mind, attendees departed with renewed inspiration, invigorated by discussions on the timeless beauty of literature, the power of curiosity, and the noble call of education.

Under the crisp Arizona sky, the brewing coffee couldn’t match the buzz of anticipation as attendees prepared for a full schedule of illuminating talks, artistic showcases, and hands-on workshops.

The opening day of the 2025 National Symposium for Classical Education had a strong start as almost 850 participants, consisting of educators, administrators, and parents gathered from across the country, with participants from as far away as Australia, to check in at the Mission Palms Hotel, this year’s site for the symposium. “Cultivating Wonder” is the theme for this annual event that serves as the flagship event for the Great Hearts Institute led by Director Carol McNamara. “Wonder is the foundational work of classical education,” noted McNamara.

Today, on the birthday of Frederick Douglass, we celebrate the legacy of one of history’s most powerful voices for freedom, and what better way to honor his impact than by highlighting a young orator following in his footsteps? Varsh Varun, a fifth-grade student at Archway Scottsdale, recently earned second place in the Frederick Douglass Oratorical Contest, delivering a stirring excerpt from “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”

“It was another successful winter season for the Great Hearts Middle School League,” said Blake Schilly, GHMSL Commissioner. Six middle school teams emerged as champions. Trivium Prep A1 softball, Glendale Prep A1 girls soccer, Veritas Prep A1 boys soccer, and Scottsdale Prep baseball secured victories in their 2025 winter championship brackets. Veritas Prep also won overall team championship in middle school tennis for both boys and girls teams.

From literature seminars and fine arts workshops to hands-on science labs and outdoor adventures, faculty across the network engaged in a variety of unique learning experiences. More than just professional development—this was a celebration of lifelong learning and camaraderie!
