Project Spotlight: Brooklyn Navy Yard Is Anchored in History and Elevating Toward the Future Nestled between the Williamsburg Bridge and the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, Brooklyn Navy Yard was built in 1801 to serve as one of the Nation’s top naval shipbuilding facilities. The Yard eventually transitioned to the 300-acre center of innovation it is today, with over 5 million square feet of building space. But in 2012, Super Storm Sandy hit the area hard and the Yard, originally serving to build the strongest of ships, was devastated by saltwater flooding. As a result of the storm, the damage to the Yard’s mechanical and electrical systems was substantial. The Yard engaged H2M architects + engineers' expertise in 2018 to address multiple separate FEMA-funded projects, including designing replacement electrical substations and boilers at 16 of their buildings, and “future-proofing” to allow for growth and increased demands on the new systems. H2M’s design was thoughtful and innovative in how to restore, and “future-proof”, the systems while minimizing the disturbance to over 400+
Today we are introducing you to Abigail Zammitti Hake (Abby), E.I.T. and learn why she loves H2M! Abby is a Wastewater Engineer at H2M architects + engineers. She assists the Wastewater team with the preparation of design calculations, plans, design reports, cost estimates and planning specifications for various wastewater infrastructure projects.
