Congratulations to John Bates, INTRUST Bank talent coordinator, for being selected to the Butler Community College Advance Kansas class of 2021. John will join other local business leaders to build skills for addressing diversity challenges and opportunities that face our community.
It's easy see the best in every situation when you work with people like our Community Reinvestment Coordinator, Joyce Dixson. Joyce, along with members of Black Women Empowered in Wichita, and Paradise Missionary Baptist Church spearheaded an effort to provide Wichita State University students unable to travel home for the holidays with a nice home cooked meal while food service was unavailable on the weekends.
Over the past several weeks, The Salvation Army has dedicated countless hours to delivering gifts as part of its Angel Tree program. Seeing all the gifts under the tree in our lobby knowing it will make Christmas a little more special for the recipients makes us proud of our employees' support of this initiative.
Jay Smith, president and chief operating officer, shared his perspective on leadership with the Wichita Business Journal after being recognized among the 2020 Executives of the Year. "The culture of our organization is based on the principles that have guided the actions for quite some time. Our tradition is embodied in the character qualities that serve as our foundation – honesty, humility, wisdom, fresh thinking, initiative, faithfulness, responsibility, respect, positivity and compassion. I believe those qualities would provide for success in whatever path a person chose." Jay is deeply committed to improving the lives of those around him. Whether it is our customers, employees, or community partners, his leadership impacts so many individuals through his compassionate, altruistic, and honest actions.
Ian Worrell, INTRUST Bank commercial lender recently shared his experience as a United Way of the Plains Loaned Executive: “Having the opportunity to serve as a Loaned Executive and learn more about an organization that INTRUST has partnered with since 1922 has been incredibly rewarding.” One of the character qualities we seek to develop in our relationships is compassion, and no organization demonstrates this quality quite like the United Way. Throughout the year the United Way creates opportunities for individuals who may not have had them otherwise, providing financial assistance, counseling, healthcare, and more to those in need. They take the time to get to know the agencies they work with as well as the people they’re helping. Every year the United Way holds a campaign to raise funds for their agencies. Employees at many companies and organizations in the community take part by volunteering both their time and treasure. As a Loaned Executive, Ian is partnering with leaders from businesses throughout the area to help employers plan a successful United Way campaign.

This August marked INTRUST's fifth consecutive year breaking ground with Habitat for Humanity on a new home. This event is typically celebrated with a team of INTRUST employees and the new homeowner working together to raise the house's first wall. And while we couldn't all be together in-person, it is a reminder of the important partnership that INTRUST has with Habitat and the individuals that have put years of work into becoming a homeowner. This year's new homeowner is Sonya. For her, the wall-raising ceremony is the product of over 400 hours of sweat equity through Habitat builds, along with many additional hours of classroom training related to homeownership. Sonya's journey to becoming a homeowner involved improving her credit and becoming debt-free. She hopes this is the first step in a path that leads to sending her children to college. For INTRUST, connecting employees to community activities is a fundamental part of our culture. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to strengthen our relationship with the community by partnering with Habitat.
